Monday 17 February 2025 Exploring shape in 1b In Year 1b, we have recently been learning all about shape in our maths lessons. We built our own repeating patterns and can identify the 'unit of repeat'. We explored a range of different 3D shapes and learnt their names. We compared similar 3D shapes according to their properties and we got to test if they have a curved face or not by seeing if they slide or roll down a ramp! We can find 2D shapes within 3D shapes by pressing them into playdough.

Friday 7 February 2025 Year 5 Music Year 5 have really been enjoying their music lessons with Mr Parkin. They have learnt about pulse, chords, frets, pitch and the pentatonic scale. They have also been able to have a go at playing a wide range of instruments including keyboard, ukulele, glockenspiel, and percussion instruments.

Friday 7 February 2025 Polar Art During the past few weeks, the children in Miss OIiphant’s class have been learning about the Arctic and Antarctica. They have enjoyed learning about the different animals that live there and their habitat. Here is some of the art work that they have created featuring polar bears with the Northern Lights as a background, snowy owls and penguins. The children used a variety of different techniques including printing, drawing and cutting. We hope you like our creations.

Wednesday 5 February 2025 Year 6 DT - Fairground Rides Last week, Year 6 had an exciting two-day learning experience exploring gears as part of their DT topic. Using Lego, they discovered how gears work and how they can change speed and direction. They then applied this knowledge to design and create their own fairground rides. Throughout the process, the children not only honed their design skills but also developed strong teamwork.

Friday 31 January 2025 Year 6 Safety Works This week the children in Year 6 visited the Safety Works which was a fantastic learning experience enabling us to participate safely in realistic situations illustrating everyday hazards and how to prevent them. The children learnt about water safety with the RLNI, Metro and trainline safety with Nexus, antisocial behaviour and peer pressure with Northumbria Police and antisocial fires and online safety with the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service. All of the sessions were interactive and allowed the children to discuss real life dangers in a safe environment. They had excellent questions and showed a great understanding about how to keep themselves safe.

Friday 24 January 2025 Year 5 - Japanese art and culture workshop Today, Year 5 were lucky enough to take part in a workshop provided by Gateshead Libraries, which looked at Japan and its culture. As part of the visit the children found out about what life is like in Japan, learnt some new language and created their own chigiri-e bookmark. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and made some fantastic creations.

Thursday 23 January 2025 Gymnastics in 1b Year 1 have been introduced to gymnastics this half term, exploring different shapes and movements. Their focus is to familiarise themselves with the apparatus, move safely, discover ways to create different shapes, and learn what it means to move like a gymnast. We have been focusing on ‘wide’ and ‘narrow’ shapes, where the children have shown different ways to interpret these movements. Tuesday 21 January 2025 Measuring the Length of the River Tyne Year 5 have been learning about Rivers and how to measure them. Today, children were able to use their learnt skills to measure the length of the Tyne Bridge.

Friday 17 January 2025 Spring Term in Nursery This half term we will be learning about 'People Who Help'. During week 1 we focussed on Firefighters and this week we have been learning about Police Officers. The children have settled back into Nursery very well after their Christmas holidays and we have welcomed some new children into our class.

Friday 20 December 2024 End of year award assembly Today marks the end of Autumn term and (almost) the end of the year. It has been another fantastic term at Wardley Primary school with so many children going above and beyond and being the "Best they can be". During today's assembly, curriculum awards were given to children who had impressed teachers across the school. Well done to them all.

Friday 20 December 2024 Spreading festive cheer at Wardley Gate On Wednesday, a group of children from Reception visited Wardley Gate Nursing home to spread some festive cheer. They sang Christmas songs with the residents, showed off their Christmas jumpers and shared what they had written on their Santa lists.

They used the laptops to create their own characters and practiced how to use different pen types and techniques to create their illustration.

Monday 16 December 2024 Year 6 at Forest School (Autumn 2) High winds meant Year 6 had their Forest School session in the hall. They designed their own shelters, learnt knots that will be useful when building their shelters in the future, and completed a survival skills quiz.

Monday 16 December 2024 Winter Walk in 1b In Year 1, we are currently learning about seasonal changes in science, with a focus on winter. We have been on a walk to identify the key changes from autumn to winter. We noticed that almost all of the trees have lost their leaves and are bare. The sky is often very cloudy and the weather can be rainy, windy and snowy! We know that the hours of daylight become shorter so it gets dark earlier now.

Thursday 12 December 2024 Nursery Stay and Play Christmas 2024 This week we welcomed our Nursery parents into Nursery for our Christmas Stay and Play. It was a lovely opportunity for them to take part in some wonderful activities and to see some of the fantastic things that we do everyday. There were stockings to decorate, playdough to make gingerbread men, Christmas cards to write in and presents to decorate. Everyone had a brilliant time!

Wednesday 11 December 2024 Hits Radio visit for DT Association Award Winner It was lovely to be invited back to Hits Radio with one of our pupils to talk about their love for Design and Technology and how proud they were to have been awarded the Local Supply Chain Excellence Awards for Outstanding Pupil Aged 5 to 11 at this year’s Design and Technology Association Awards.

Friday 22 November 2024 Interfaith week As part of Interfaith week, the children in Reception and Key Stage One were lucky enough to have a visit from Kirtadi this week, who spoke to them all about the Hindu religion. The children particularly enjoyed learning about the festival of Diwali, listening to the Indian music and hearing the story of Prince Rama and Princess Sita.

Friday 22 November 2024 Maths in Nursery Over the last year, we have developed a new curriculum for Maths in Nursery. Taking the lead from The Learning Trajectories curriculum, we have created a series of teacher-led small groups sessions were the children work on numbers within 5. The aim of these sessions is to increase the children's understanding of the numbers and how they are made up. The children are given a STEM sentence for each lesson which helps them to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts covered. For example, "1 more than 3 is 4". The children also carry out daily group work with Miss Nelson where they focus on skills such as counting, shape recognition and subitising (recognising quantities of objects on sight).

Friday 22 November 2024 Pudsey Fun in Nursery We had lots of fun in Nursery for Children in Need last week. We decorated spotty biscuits, used stickers to make an eye patch for Pudsey, coloured in Pudsey pictures and used pompoms to decorate a giant Pudsey face.

Friday 22 November 2024 30 Hour Nursery Over the last few weeks, our 30 hour nursery children have taken part in lots of different enrichment activities. They added their handprint to a giant heart to create a Friendship heart which is displayed in Nursery and shows that we are all friends. They have joined in with Cosmic Yoga, listened to many different traditional tales, create a massage circle and enjoyed some relaxation time complete with calming music.

Thursday 21 November 2024 Interfaith Week On Monday, as part of our inter-faith learning, Brother Khadim came into school to talk to us about the Muslim religion. In particular, he talked to us about the hajj and how this is an important pilgrimage to Mecca for Muslims. He also spoke about Muslim clothing, food and celebrations. At the end of the session, the children asked some excellent questions to further their understanding of the religion.

Thursday 21 November 2024 Author Visit On Tuesday, the children in Year 5/6 were lucky enough to enjoy a visit from the author Steve Skidmore who has written over 200 books. The children found Steve hilarious and thoroughly enjoyed listening to his 'I Hero' book which is an interactive adventure story where you get to choose the direction the story goes. A huge Thank You to Steve and Gateshead Libraries for coming into school.

Thursday 21 November 2024 Fancy Footwork Year 2 have been enjoying developing their footballing skills during their P.E. lessons this half-term. The focus of the lessons have been about using the side of their foot when passing the ball. It has been satisfying watching their skills progress.

Wednesday 20 November 2024 Year 1a Music Miss Fraser's class have been learning about rhythm this Half Term in their music lessons. The children are learning how to spot long and short sounds that can be heard over a steady beat or pulse. Here the children are trying to clap rhythm using copy back clapping, and question and answer clapping.

Monday 18 November 2024 Year 2 at Forest School (Autumn 2) Year 2 completed three activities all about survival skills. A trail through the trees showed them what to pack in their survival bags, and they built shelters using tarp and rope to keep warm and dry. The children also tried to safely make little fires using a flint and steel, and a cotton wool ball on a shell.

Friday 15 November 2024 Odd Socks day As part of Antibullying week, lots of children came to school wearing odd socks to celebrate difference and diversity. The children learned the importance of 'choosing respect' and understanding that everybody is different but that we are all important!

We have managed to raise a fantastic £258 for this worthwhile charity, as well as learning about all the brilliant work that Children in Need do to help others. Tuesday 12 November 2024 Year 3 Skipping Trip Year 3 had the amazing opportunity to go to the NUcastle foundation grounds to take part in a sporting event. They spent their morning working on their coordination, team building and most importantly skipping! They took part in a range of activities which taught them the different types of skips, how to skip with a partner and how to do group skipping activities. The pupils enjoyed it so much that when they came back to school, they continued to skip during their break time!

Tuesday 12 November 2024 Year 6 Climate Change at Beamish Last week, Year 6 took part in a climate change workshop with Beamish. To start the week, Catherine came to the school to discuss how our carbon footprint has increased over time and how this impacts our world. The children used maps and pictures to explore how life has changed over the years and to understand how the use of fossil fuels, particularly coal, has declined in the North East. Then, on Thursday, the class visited Beamish Museum, where they experienced first-hand how life has changed.

Thursday 7 November 2024 Geography in 1b In our ‘Here I am’ geography unit we have been understanding where we live and the different types of settlement that people live in (village, town and city). We have explored photographs and maps, given directions using ‘left’ and ‘right’, and identified human and physical features. We went on a walk around our local area to explore the human and physical features in Wardley and turned this into a fieldwork sketch.

Friday 25 October 2024 Halloween Fun Miss Oliphant’s class have had great fun this week taking part in Halloween activities. They have enjoyed writing spooky spells, making collage ghosts, mark-making on pumpkins, dressing up in Halloween costumes and dancing along to the music. However, their favourite activity was making and eating ghosts on toast. They had to spread butter on their toast and decorate it to make it look like a ghost using bananas and chocolate chips. Yummy!

Friday 25 October 2024 People's Kitchen Thank you to everyone who generously donated items for the People's kitchen over the last two weeks. Some of our Year 6 children helped with the big count this afternoon and we have managed to collect a huge 302 items. Well done Wardley!

Friday 25 October 2024 Spooky fun in Reception This week the children in Reception have had lots of spooky Halloween fun. They have made potions, drawn around shapes to create Halloween pictures as well as exploring the outside and inside of giant pumpkins. They thoroughly enjoyed getting dressed up in their favourite costumes and singing and dancing together in the classroom and the garden.

Tuesday 22 October 2024 Year 4 trip to the library On Monday afternoon, Year 4 took a lovely walk down to Pelaw library as part of our Reading for Pleasure (RfP). The children had a chapter of Dirty Berie read to them and then they spent some time exploring the books available to them. We all had a lovely time and many of us can't wait to go back during the half term!

Friday 18 October 2024 Year 3 History Year 3 are starting this new History topic by creating timelines that show the progression through pre-historic Britain. They have used their knowledge of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age to decorate signs and then worked together to place these in chronological order. Those with the key words Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic were also able to correctly order the times of the Stone Age. Great job Year 3!

Friday 18 October 2024 Year 6 Hockey Year 6 have enjoyed PE with Shay this half term. Over the weeks, they have been learning how to play hockey and have thoroughly enjoyed their matches. The children have shown great skill and sportsmanship in their lessons.

Wednesday 9 October 2024 Year 6 STEMfest Yesterday, Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous day at the North East STEMfest at the Beacon of Light. To begin the day, we all had the opportunity to meet pilots from British Airways and experienced the flight simulator. After that, we spent the rest of the days engaging with exhibitors from a range of industries all relating to STEM. Days like these are designed to kindle enthusiasm and clarity among young minds about the wonders of STEM subjects and it certainly did that!

Wednesday 2 October 2024 1b's Reading Rivers Following our reading workshop with our parents and carers, the children in Year 1b have made some amazing Reading Rivers at home to show what they have read throughout the week. This included shop signs, food packaging and story books. It's great to see the children reading so many different types of text and showing off their creativity with this homework project!

Friday 27 September 2024 Year 5b English This half term the children are learning about how to create a setting description. We are using the book 'The Kapok Tree' as our stimulus which tells the story of a woodcutter who decides against cutting down a tree which is home to many different animals. In today's lesson we collected ideas about how we might start our opening paragraph.

Wednesday 25 September 2024 Year 3 PE What an amazing sporty start to Year 3! The pupils have been enjoying their first two PE topics: hockey and gymnastics. They have been focusing on creating a successful power pass alongside ball control, in hockey. In addition to this, they have created some great symmetric and asymmetric balances in gymnastics.

Monday 9 September 2024 Class 1b's First Week This week Class 1b have had a great week settling back into school in their new classroom! We have worked hard to follow our 'Ready, Respectful and Safe' rules and completed a range of PSHE lessons. This included goal setting of things we can't do YET, participating in some mindfulness activities and using affirmations to adopt a positive mindset. On Friday, we reflected on our favourite parts of the week and look forward to the next one!
