This year for World Book Day, our Year 1 class explored the beautiful story Jarvis’s The Boy with Flowers in His Hair. The story is about a boy named David who expresses his emotions through the flowers that grow in his hair. When David feels happy and confident, his hair blooms brightly, but when he feels sad, the flowers begin to fade. With the help of his friend, he learns that kindness and friendship can help bring colour and joy back into his life. We had some wonderful discussions about feelings, friendship, and how we can support each other.

To celebrate the story, we took part in some creative activities. We decorated pictures of the David’s bare branches using a variety of mixed media, carefully choosing colours and textures to represent different emotions. We also created storyboards to show the main events of the story, helping us to understand the beginning, middle, and end.

In the afternoon, we had lots of fun listening to MC Grammar’s World Book Day song and sharing our own hairstyles and accessories, just like David. It was a joyful day full of creativity, music, and imagination!
