During each half term, the children take part in a fun and engaging reading for pleasure session. Last half term, our session was 'Book Blankets'. A Book Blanket is a large selection of books spread around an inviting reading space (just like our classroom) and it is designed to encourage curiosity and exploration.
The children were given specific prompts to guide their choices, including:
Find a book with a front cover you like
Find a book about something you are interested in
Find a book that you think will make you laugh
After the prompts were introduced, the children had a few minutes to explore and browse the books before selecting one that matched the statement. Once everyone returned to the carpet with their chosen book, they were encouraged to share why they made their selection. This led to some fantastic discussions and thoughtful “book talk”.
To finish the session, the children chose their favourite book to enjoy independently or share with a friend, creating a calm and purposeful reading atmosphere. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm for books and their confidence in talking about what they like to read.
We can't wait for this half terms RfP session which will be a trip to Pelaw Libray.
