Year 1, DT structures topic

In Year 1, the children became young engineers during an exciting Design and Technology topic focused on building bridge structures. Using their knowledge of frame structures, the children were challenged to design and construct a strong, freestanding bridge that could span a “river” and support weight (toy car).

Before building, the children explored different types of bridges and discussed their features, including how structures stay stable. They investigated how bridges are strengthened through reinforcement and looked closely at how engineers use different materials to make structures stronger, stiffer and more secure.

Working collaboratively, the children designed their own bridge ideas through drawing and discussion before being giving the challenge of making their bridge from paper and beginning the construction. Using practical skills such as cutting, shaping, joining and reinforcing, they carefully built their bridges, testing and adapting their designs as they worked.

A highlight of the session was testing each completed bridge to see if it could hold a toy car. The children evaluated their finished structures against the design criteria, considering what worked well and what they might improve them next time.

This hands-on challenge developed creativity, resilience and problem-solving while introducing the children to important engineering concepts. We were incredibly impressed by their teamwork, perseverance and imaginative ideas. It was wonderful to see the children applying their learning in such a practical and engaging way as they discovered what it takes to become successful bridge builders.
