Year 1, Art - tones, tints and shades
During their recent art topic on colour and tone, Year 1 have been developing their creativity and artistic skills through a range of exciting activities. The children explored how artists use colour to express ideas and feelings, while learning important artistic vocabulary such as tint, tone, shade and shadow.
The class investigated primary and secondary colours and discovered how colours can be mixed together to create different effects. They enjoyed experimenting with paint by adding white, grey and black to create tints, tones and shades. The children were fascinated to see how changing colours could completely transform an artwork.
As part of their learning, the children explored warm and cool colours and discussed how colours can represent emotions. They looked at artwork from Pablo Picasso, particularly his Blue Period, and identified how different tones and shades were used to create mood and feeling.
Using a variety of materials, the children created their own colourful artwork inspired by the techniques they had practised. They developed their painting, drawing and creative design skills while confidently sharing ideas and evaluating their work. We are incredibly proud of their imagination, enthusiasm and growing confidence as young artists.
