Reception visit to Washington Wetlands
Our Reception children enjoyed an exciting and memorable visit to Washington Wetlands Centre, where they took part in a wonderful workshop based on the story 'Ava's Destiny'.
Throughout the day, the children learned how to become Wildlife Warriors by developing a deeper appreciation of the natural world around them. They listened carefully to birdsong, explored different scents from plants, and completed a range of special tasks to help Ava on her journey.
The children were delighted to meet Ava herself – an Osprey guardian who was half human and half bird! Ava needed to travel to a secret destination to meet the other guardians, and the children discovered that ospreys migrate all the way to the Sahara Desert each year. Through the workshop, they helped Ava prepare for her important journey while learning fascinating facts about wildlife and conservation.
After lunch, the children had the opportunity to explore the Wetlands Centre. They enjoyed playing in the park, working together in teams to transport water from the bottom of a hill to the top, and visiting the many wildlife ponds around the site. During their exploration, they saw a wide variety of birds, including white swans, black swans, pink flamingos, geese, mallards, coots, moorhens, and many more. One of the highlights of the day was watching the otters being fed.
It was an absolutely fantastic day, and the children were a real credit to our school. Staff from the Wetlands Centre, as well as other visitors, commented on how well-behaved, respectful, and enthusiastic our children were throughout the visit.
As an added bonus, every Reception family will receive a free pass to revisit the Wetland Centre during the summer. The children have also been given a range of follow-up challenges to complete back at school as they continue their journey towards becoming Wildlife Guardians.
We are incredibly proud of all the children and would like to thank the staff at Washington Wetlands Centre for providing such an engaging and inspiring experience.
