Reception Handwriting Skills

In Reception at Wardley Primary, children begin developing the foundations for handwriting through fun, purposeful activities. At this stage, the focus is on building strong fine motor skills, good hand control, and confidence with mark-making. Children practise using a range of tools such as pencils, crayons and paintbrushes, while also learning how to hold them comfortably and steadily.

We encourage children to form pre-writing patterns before moving towards letter shapes. This includes drawing simple lines. We are also working on activities that strengthen the muscles in the hands and fingers. This week we used playdoh to help the children practise control and coordination, supporting smoother pencil movements as they grow in ability.

To support their gross motor development, this week the children worked in groups to set out and complete an obstacle course. 

At home, you can support your child by providing short, regular opportunities to practise without pressure. Encourage your child to draw, write their name, and complete simple activities like colouring within lines or tracing shapes.
