If you go down to the woods today...

Unfortunately we didn't get to the woods, but Reception Children did enjoy a picnic with their favourite Teddy Bears. After a week of enjoying the Michael Rosen/ Helen Oxenbury book "We're going on a bear hunt" the children all went into the garden to look for a bear. They swished through grass, squelched in mud, splashed in water, tripped over logs, battled through a shaving foam snowstorm and tiptoed into a cave where they did find a bear...a teddy bear. We invited him to join us for a picnic, and so he wouldn't feel too lonely, all the children brought their own favourite teddies from home.

Year 5 go for gold!

On the 8th of May, Year 5 visited the Gateshead International Stadium to take part in the Tesco Great School Run 2012. All 35 children from the Year 5 cohort took part in the race, which was split into different categories, with 10 keen runners entering into the 'elite' band.

As if the chance to run at an international athletics stadium wasn't enough, the children witnessed the spectacular helicopter arrival of Olympic Silver medalist Colin Jackson and former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton. Prior to the race, the children took part in a fantastic warm-up led by the two inspirational celebrities.

Following the gruelling one mile run each child recieve a medal, although our very own Rachel Washington clearly wasn't content with just a medal, as she powered home to finish as third girl overall, collecting a very nice trophy to prove it! Well done Rachel!

You can watch the Sky Tyne & Wear News report on the event here...keep an eye out for some of our runners towards the end of the video.

Tynemouth Beach and Sealife Centre

Last Thursday Year 1/2 went on a trip to Tynemouth Beach and Sealife Centre. Although the sun wasn't shining, that didnt put us off and we got straight into building our sand castles. We all had a great time on the beach showing off our building skills. The sandcastles were all great works of art with seaweed, shells and pebbles all being added for extra decoration. After the beach we headed down to Cruso's cafe for a well earned ice cream stop. A big Thank You to Mr Malik for letting us all get an ice cream and to the shop staff who were all lovely and kind to us. (it was a bit chilly so sitting inside the cafe was a relief.) Next it was time to head to the Sealife centre. We all had a chance to go around the centre looking at all the fantastic undersea creatures and those stinky otters! We also had a great touch pool session where we were able to feel starfish, sea urchins and an anemone. Dont ask what part of the starfish we were touching! and did you know that a star fish can grow an arm back if it loses it. Fascinating facts learned at the sea life centre. Take a look at our pictures to see what a great time we had.

Forest School Session 2

Last week Year 1/2 had another fantastic morning at Bill Quay Farm in the woods. This time we made some new friends, The Quay People. We had to creep into the woods so that we wouldn't disturb them or scare them away. They had left some of the finest wool hanging on the trees so we could pick it and twist the wool to make bracelets. They were very pretty. Next we met Authur, a woodland creature made from natural materials. We had to make friends for Authur and enjoyed getting dirty squidging and squashing the mud in our hands. We were really excited to find a note in the trees from the Quay people, they told us that their food store had been washed away with all the rain we had been having and asked us to collect their favourite foods. We whittled some sticks and made woodland kebabs for the Quay people. It was another jam packed morning and we all had a great time.

Gateshead in Bloom Art Competition

Earlier this year children from classes across the school took part in the Gateshead in Bloom Art Competition. As always, entries were of a very high standard with art work taking inspiration from flowers in gardens, parks and fields. We are proud that Wardley had two overall group winners this year: Alexander O'Halloran, who won the Year 1 & 2 group and Emily Walton, who won the Nursery and Reception group. The winning paintings were displayed at the Saltwell Park Show and at Gateshead Civic Centre in April and the two lucky artists received a certificate and a monetary prize. Click on the video below to see some wonderful examples of our competition entries.
Make a video of your own at Animoto.

Reception Visit Bill Quay Farm

Just before Easter, the children from Reception visited Bill Quay Farm. We had a lovely afternoon feeding the animals and learning all about the farm during spring. We even had a turn at feeding the new born lambs. Thank you to all the parents and carers who helped to make the children's first outing truly memorable.

Fantastic attitudes in Year 6!

We are now currently in the final run up to the Year 6 SATs, which are due to commence on 14th May. We felt we had to publish on our website how hard the children have been working and how they have been so eager when revising in school to help them with the tests. Mr Connor and Mrs Wallace are both amazed at how focussed the children have been and the attitudes of everyone continue to be fantastic, with children even asking to stay in over playtimes to do extra revision!!

Well done to all the children in Year 6 and keep going with your fantastic attitudes, we are very proud of you!

Year 1/2 Forest Schools

Today it was the turn of Year 1/2 to visit Bill Quay Farm and take part in our Forest School sessions. When we arrived we met Kirsty and she showed us around the camp we were going to be in for our activities. The first game we played was 1,2,3 where are you? It was great fun hiding in the woods. To become better at hiding and become more comouflaged like the animals in the woods, we made masks using all natural materials we found in our surroundings. Once we had practiced creeping quietly, we became nature detectives and went on a minibeast hunt. We found all sorts of creepy crawlies including slugs, worms, spiders and woodlice. To help the minibeasts we collected sticks and leaves to make a cosy shelter for them. To end the session we made a giant spiders web with wool which Kirsty had to try and creep through without making it vibrate. It was a great first session and we all had a fantastic time and thankfully the rain stayed away. Keep watch for the next installment.

Forest Schools Session 3

For their last of their Forest Schools Session, the children started by talking about different natural materials and textures. They incorporated their ideas into masks which were made using a range of natural materials found on the forest floor. Excitedly, the children hunted for mini-beast and managed to catch a range of different creatures which they identified.

Forest School Session 2

On Tuesday, the 28th of February, the children from Mr Burfield's class spent the morning at Bill Quay Farm. The second forest school session was really exciting. Blinfolded, the children guided each other around the woods and described different trees to their partners. Later on, they found out about bird's nests and even made some of their own. Not satisified with that, the class finished the session by making bird food which they left in the woods for the birds.

Lawrence Hill Court Visit

form>

As part of the school's commiment to developing links with groups within our community, some children from Year 1 and 2 visited Lawrence Hill Court and spent a lovely morning getting to know some of the residents. Everyone enjoyed the visit.

The children started off by sharing their reading books and getting to know their partners better. After that, things got really serious as the children and the residents took part in an exciting game of bingo together.

Wardley goes Worldwide!

On March 6th and 7th, the entire school took part in a global event to improve our Mathematics and Spelling skills. World Maths and Spelling day involved the children going online to compete against children from all over the world in a series of number and spelling activities. All the children particpated and enjoyed playing against children from places as far afield as Singapore, New Zealand and Canada!!

Every child received a certificate to state that they competed, but the top three children in school who scored the most number of points across both days were Harry Selkirk (Year 5/6), Benjamin Bysouth (Year 3a) and Amy Robinson (Year 3/4 c) and they received a special 'outstanding achievement' certificate to celebrate their performance.

A big well done to the entire school for competing and showing that Wardley is now a school known worldwide!!
