Around the World music workshop

Reception's topic this half term was Our World. The children have been learning about their local and regional area and about other cultures from countries around the World.

As part of the topic, the children had a visit from musicians who performed a Music Workshop for the children to participate in and experience music and songs from other countries and cultures. They really enjoyed dressing up, singing, dancing and playing a range of musical instruments.

The children have learned a lot of new songs and love singing and performing them!

Early Years Sports Days

Reception held their annual sports day this summer term and all of the children took part in the following fun events:

Pancake race
Angel of the North race
Beanbag race
Running race

Everyone had great fun cheering and clapping the children as they took part.

In addition to this, Nursery also held their Sports Stay and Play event in the Nursery Garden. Parents and carers were invited into nursery to engage in a range of activities designed to promote the children's physical development.

The children had the opportunity to take part in the following activities:

Beanbag target throwing
Balancing
Stepping logs
Balancing quoits
Penalty shootout
Bat and ball
Climbing frame
Tricycles and Scooters

All of the children in the Early Years had lots of fun and did very well in their events.

Key Stage One Sports Day

With fine weather, the annual Key Stage One Wardley Sports Day was held on Tuesday 12th July 2010. A fantastic time was had by the children, parents and all staff. There were five different races: Running, running with a rugby ball, Quoits Balance, Bean Bag Balance and Through the hoop. After the five competitive races, the Yellow team came out winners. The children were all very enthusiastic and brilliantly behaved.

We also had some individual 50m sprint races. Here are the results

Wardley Sweepstake Winners

As part of the 'They think it's all over...' topic, the children in Key Stage One took part in a sweep stake to see who's drawn team would win the World Cup. The children were also set a homework task of creating a presentation all about the country they had drawn out of the hat.

The children who drew the eventual winners Spain were:

THE BIG SING 2010

Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 went to The Sage, Gateshead to take part in this year's BIG SING. The theme for 2010 was 'Coming Home' and the children sang a huge array of songs based around this idea. As you will see from the photos, everyone had a fabulous day and we even had time to stop for a picnic lunch in Baltic Square. Luckily, we were also able to see The Millenium Bridge tilting whilst we were eating lunch. When we returned to school, all of the children were worn out from all of the walking, singing and dancing. It was a fantastic day for everyone.

Key Stage One's Blind Football experience

The World Cup in South Africa is not the only World Cup taking place this year. We are to hold another football World Cup in our own country this year...The Blind Football World Cup.

In August 2010, Hereford will be the host of fifth Blind Football World Cup. As part of our 'They think it's all over' topic and to celebrate this tournament, the Key Stage One children took part in a Blind Football training session provided by the Blind Institute of Sport.

]]> Blind football is played on a solid surface, generally indoors, with a football containing bearings so that it makes a noise when it moves. Each team consists of five players; outfield players are classified as B1, which means that some may have some light perception, although eye shields are worn during games to counter this; goalkeepers are sighted, but cannot leave their area. In blind football, there are no offside rules.

The children had the opportunity to wear eye shields to imitate the experience for the Blind footballers. They also had the experience of being a guide for a person who is partially sighted.

They practised dribbling with a football and sprinting whilst wearing the eye shields. This proved to be very difficult if the children didn't have a good close control and balance.

The session was a fantastic opportunity for children to experience what life is like for a partially sighted person.

]]> Ever Day Counts! Forget what's going on in the Barclay's Premier League, everyone at Wardley wants to know which class is winning the Attendance Premiership.

Each class plays as a team and tries to score as many points as possible during the week. Points are awarded for the overall attendance percentage as well as the number of children who achieve 100% during the week.

At the end of the season (each term) the team in first place will get to hold aloft the mighty trophy during a ceremony which will crown them the THE ATTENDANCE CHAMPIONS

Wardley's Wonderful Trip To Washington Old Hall

On 24th and 25th May, Year 3/4 went on a fabulous visit to Washington Old Hall. The purpose of the visit was to develop our knowledge and understanding of what it would be like to live and work in Tudor times. The children were engaged in various activities throughout the day. Highlights included: dressing up as Tudors, playing Tudor games, having a Tudor banquet and creating Tudor style portraits.

]]> Back at school, the children wrote a recount about their day. Miss Shields set them a challenge! The best recounts would be displayed on our website. All of the recounts were of exceptional quality. Mr Malik had the difficult job of deciding which on one was the best. After careful deliberation, he decided that Brooke Smith's deserved to win for Year 4. In Year 3, Miss Clark and Miss Shields decided that Kyle Reed's recount was fabulous. His work included punctuation and a range of time connectives.

Here is an extract from Brooke Smith's recount:

The first room was the kitchen. There was lots of fruit in there. The man wanted us each to have a job so we all volunteered. Shaun Reay volunteered to be the cook and Alex Mitchell volunteered to be the spit boy. The next room was the Grand Hall where the Lord and Lady would eat. They sat at the top table while the other guests sat on a table beneath them.

One beautiful morning, we went on a trip to Washington Old Hall. Firstly we got on the bus. Then we entered the Tudor Hall. Firstly we entered the kitchen. It was really fun because I got to be the cook. Secondly, we went into the garden. There were many flowers and they all looked beautiful.

Expo Chef Visits Wardley

Last week, the children at Wardley Primary School welcomed an Expo Chef. This was a very exciting event in school, where children were given the opportunity to learn about healthy eating. They even got the chance to prepare some delicious recipes by assisting our Expo Chef. Culinary creations included: homemade burgers, vegetable stew, salad and fruit smoothies. At the end of the session, the children were handed recipe booklets so that they could try out any of the delicious recipes at home. Miss Shields even tried out the vegetable stew in Healthy Eating club last week. We were delighted to hold the event in school because it encouraged children to try new dishes and to consider healthy choices when eating lunches at school or food at home.

Year 5 Volcanoes

As part of their 'Land Before Time' topic, Year 5 have been making their own erupting volcanoes. They began by shaping their model and decorating it to make it look realistic. After that, as the grand finale, the pupils added vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, food dye and washing up liquid to make their volcanoes erupt! It was great fun!
