As the entry point to the 'Carnival of Animals' topic, the Key Stage One children got to meet some real life pets. Three different animals visited our school: a rabbit, two guide dog and two turtles.
The children had to ask the visitors questions which would help them find out about how to take care of a pet.

The children then had the opportunity to work with a Nintendo DS on the Nintendo Dog game. In small groups, the children looked after a pet dog. They had to feed, clean, exercise, train and generally take care for the dog. The children showed that they had the right skills, knowledge, care and understanding to be a successful pet owner.

Wardley hosted created its very own car showroom, selling various vehicles of all shapes and sizes. The Key Stage One children have been designing and making vehicles in their DT lessons. Working in pairs, the children were given a specific design brief. The car had to be able to:
*Move freely
*Seat more than two people
*Have a good quality finish

After many hours making their cars, with moving wheels, doors and even upholstered seats, Mr Malik came to see which car he would most like to purchase. The children had to act as salesman, identifying the best selling features of the car in order to try and persuade Mr Malik to buy their car.

The children in Year One and Two performed separate versions of 'The Sleepy Shepherd'. The play told the story of a shepherd who didn't do any work because he was always busy sleeping. One day, he got woke up by the other shepherds snoring. While he was awake, an angel came to tell him about a special baby being born in Bethlehem. He then made a long journey to visit the baby and meet Mary and Joseph.

Joan Lennon, author of The Ferret Princess and Wag and the King, visited our school last Thursday. Throughout the day, Joan conducted workshops with years 3,4 and 5 in the school library. She promoted her new book: The Mucker's Tale, which is due to be published in the new year. It was an amazing event which has encouraged and inspired children in KS2 to read more of her books. Read on to find out how much fun we had!

Joan began by explaining where her ideas come from. The Ferret Princess was inspired by her love of ferrets. Year 3 and 4 got to meet all of them!

Next we met Wag, a dog who tries to keep his master out of trouble.

During the workshop, we showed Joan some of the work that we had been doing in class about The Ferret Princess. This included diary entries, letters and book reviews. Joan was so impressed that she requested we scan some of our work so that she can post it on her website.

At the end of the day, Joan signed copies of her books. Everyone was eager to read them. Extra copies have been ordered and should arrive in school soon.

The Children in KS1 were all very excited when a package arrived from our link school in Uganda. Inside the package was: local craft work, pictures of children who go to Kikajjo Junior School and a lovely letter telling us about what life is like for teachers in Uganda.

Now we have to think about what we can send to Uganda to tell them about life in England.

As part of the 'Va Va Voom!' transport themed topic, the Year Two children visited the Stephenson Railway Museum to find out about trains in the past. The children met a locomotive named 'Billy' which was built by George Stephenson nearly 200 years ago. They found out about how steam was used to power the engines. The children also got to sit in an old fashioned carriage. Here, they played a game where they had to guess a material when blindfolded, and then find the same material somewhere in the carriage. The children finished their workshop by designing their own trains.

After lunch, the children travelled down to Segedunum to find out about boats in the past. The children were shown a fantastic view of the Tyne and spotted the different boats on they could see. The children were then shown how boats started as a simple log and developed over time into large passenger and cargo carriers. The children discovered how the method in which boats where powered changed from a simple paddle, to a engine powered propeller. The children then became sea captains and had to guide a 'beebot' ship to a variety of destinations.

We completed our journey by travelling back on a very modern method of transport, the Metro. We imagined our ride back to school was a much quieter and smoother trip than on a Stephenson locomotive. How transport has changed greatly!
The Year 2 travelled up to Heworth Comprehensive School to attend a multi skills sporting festival. The festival comprised of the children using their running, jumping, catching, kicking, throwing and balancing skills. All the children were very excited as it was one of the first times they had all represented the school in a competitive event. The Wardley children were split into four teams and competed with eight other teams from Whitemere, Bill Quay, Lingey House and the Drive. The children throughly enjoyed the event and their behaviour was a credit to the school.
