What living things can we find in a pond?

On Monday 18th July 2011, the children from Year 3/4a visited the wildlife pond at Bill Quay farm. During science lessons this half term, the children have been working hard on a project about different habitats. First, they found out about the habitats in the school grounds and then a contrasting habitat at Bill Quay farm.
Before the visit, the children made predictions of what they thought they might find at the pond. Some their predictions were:
*lily pads
*frogs
*snails
*reeds
*fish
*algae
After the tour of the farm, the children began to pond dip. In pairs, the pupils dipped fishing nets into the overgrown pond and searched the nets for living things. By the end of the session, the children found:
*male newt
*female newt
*biting midge larva
*6 pond snails
*blood worm
The children also saw lots of green algae.
When they got back to school, they researched the different creatures they had discovered. Some interesting facts the children found were:
The male newt was bigger than the female.
A newt is a carnivore and secondary consumer.
A biting midge larva is a carnivore.
Pond snails are herbivores and a primary consumer.
The children had a wonderful time despite the terrible rain! Mr Evans thanks all the parents for coming on the trip and hoped they wouldn't be put off coming again because of the awful soaking the got.
