Wardley Primary School in partnership with Wardley Children's Centre, launched a six week pre-nursery programme in the summer term for the children due to begin nursery this September. The aim was to support parents and children with the important first step of starting education.
The first week of the programme involved a meeting for the parents to attend and was to share the aims and structure of the programme. For the following five weeks, sessions were aimed at both parents and children. The programme was based around five main themes:
Week 1: Stories and books
Week 2: Nursery rhymes
Week 3: Number rhymes and songs
Week 4: Action rhymes and songs
Week 5: Mark making/ fine motor development
Each session involved a short adult led activity and then allowed the children and parents to engage in play activities related to the theme of the session. The children had access to the Early Years outdoor area for four of the five weeks and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area. The fifth week allowed the children to have the opportunity to visit, explore and play in their nursery classroom.
The sessions allowed the children to become familiar with their new school and nursery environment. It also gave the children the opportunity to meet other children from their nursery class and meet their new teacher, Miss Gillie. The parents and children also received activity ideas, factsheets, a free book, colouring sheets, nursery rhyme and song words to carry on the educational fun at home over the holidays!
We look forward to the children beginning their education in nursery with us in September!

I would just like to say what a great idea the parent/carer interaction is. Ive had a great time building houses with the year two children this week and its been good to see how things work within the classroom setting.
