Victorian School Day
As part of the 'Schools' topic, the Key Stage One children have experienced a victorian day to gain an understanding of what school life was like 100 years ago. The children dressed up in victorian clothing and carried out various lessons and activities just like victorian children.
The afternoon began with a hand and shoe inspection to check the cleanliness of the children. The lessons that followed included:
*drills - a very simple P.E lesson where the children stood in rows and carried out various stretches on the command of the teacher.
*arithmetic - chanting of times tables and number facts
*handwriting - writing simple sentences on chalkboards.
The children had to also behave in the manner of a victorian child. For example, call the adults 'Sir' or 'Ma'am', stand up when an adult entered the room, write with only their right hand, ask no questions, stand up to answer a question.
The children then wrote about their experiences.
Yesterday it was a Victorian day. It wasn't very nice. The teacher wasn't very nice. We had to call him sir and we had to call Mrs Starling 'Ma'am'. The teacher was very strict. We were very very bored. IT WAS THE MOST BORING DAY EVER! We had to have a hand inspection and shoe inspection. When the teacher came in we had to stand up. We had to use chalkboards. We had to sit in rows of twos. In drills, which is P.E, it was boring. We just did stretches and turns. And when we answered a question we had to stand up.
