Wardley Community Park Stone Work

Last year the children from Key Stage One and Key Stage Two were asked to take part in a competition to compose a short poem for three stone seats that were to be made and put into Wardley Park for the community to use.

The chosen poems were written by Amy Barron, Alisha Heddon and Emily Terry from Year 5 and have been carved into the stone seats by artist Gilbert Ward. The children's poems were written about living in the community of Wardley.

As well as the three stone seats, the artist has created an entrance sign based on community's mining theme. Gilbert decided that the sculptures should reflect Wardley's mining heritage and honour the memories of those who worked in the mines.

The children went down to the park to get their photos taken with some members of the local community and the artist. The photos are to be published in a local newspaper this week.

You can find the stone work at Whitmere Gardens in Wardley and in the park.
