Rock Properties

As part of our topic work about mines, we have been learning all about different types of rocks. In 3/4C, Mrs Dixon set us the challenge of using the properties of rocks that we have discovered to persuade the customer to buy a certain rock.

pumice stone.jpgOliver Barnett, from Friends Forever team produced the most persuasive letter about pumice.
William Crone, a guest for the afternoon, was selected by Cool Cidds for his letter on slate.slate roof tiles.jpg

Super Stars choice was Bethany Kendall's letter about chalk.chalk.jpg

Dear Customer,

I think you should use pumice for your bath time because it rubs away dead skin. Another fact about pumice is that is doesn't break easily so it won't break when you put all of your body weight on it. In addition to this pumice has lots of holes in it which means it is permeable so it won't hurt your skin as it's not too hard and it is the only rock that floats.

Dear Customer,

I think you should use slate to make your roof tiles. This is because you need a hard material so it won't wear away. Another reason is it is impermeable which means it won't let the water through it. It also splits easily so it is light.

Dear Customer.

I think you should use marble to make your fireplace because it can be polished and it can come in different colours. Also it is impermeable so if you spill water on it, it won't go through. In addition to this if you drop metal on it, it won't fall apart as it hard.

Dear Customer,

As you are looking for something to write with on your chalkboard I have found a rock called chalk. This would be perfect to write with on your blackboard as it does not wear well so when you try to write with it, it will work perfectly good. In addition to this, chalk splits when you put a lot of pressure onto it which means all of the pieces out of the chalk will attach on the board but you can also rub it off and it does not take that long. Alos chalk is very crumbly. If you are wondering how we know this, it is because we have tested it and everything I have told you is what the results were. Oh and did I mention that it lasts a long time so it will save you money!
