Our trip to St Paul's Monastery and Church
We have been learning about St Bede and his life at St Paul's Monastery in Jarrow. St Paul's Church is still standing 1300 years after being built. It was an amazing experience to visit the church in which Bede would have actually worshipped. When we visited the church we had the opportunity to become monks for the morning.
We had to line up in silence and when the bells rang we had to walk into the church in pairs.
We sat at the alter and Jane told us about the monastery and church's history.
Glass was extremely expensive in Anglo Saxon times so buildings usually had small windows. However, St Paul's at Jarrow was lucky enough to have one of the first stain glass windows in Britain and it dates back to the times of St Bede - look how tiny it is!!
Jane told us all about what life would have been like for a monk.
