Healthy Eating Presentation

On Thursday 24th May 2007, the parents and grandparents of the Reception children came to watch the Healthy Eating Presentation. The children talked about their favourite healthy foods and ways of keeping fit. They demonstrated how to warm up for exercise. The adults had the opportunity to carry out activities about healthy eating with guidance from their child. Finally they were entertained by a fantastic dance routine. The event was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Reception Farm Visit

The Reception class had a fun filled day on their trip to Hall Hill Farm. On the 9th of May all the Reception children and 16 very kind helpers travelled to Lanchester in County Durham to go and see Rooney and Beckham.... No sadly not the amazing footballers but two very cute wallabies.

After singing many songs on the coach the children were very excited to arrive at Hall Hill Farm. We were greeted by our guides for the day and had the opportunity to visit the various parts of the farm. The children loved seeing Percy Peacock, Henry Turkey and Tuppence Donkey.

The children were thrilled to have the chance to feed the lambs, hold the rabbits and guinea pigs, and handle the baby chicks. (However Mrs Riches was not as keen to participate!)

Wardley Primary School children are to take part in the ‘The Walk to School Week’ on the 21th-25th May 2007.

Walk to School has been developed by Gateshead Council to encourage adults and children to discover some of the benefits of walking to and from school in order to reduce our reliance on the car. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity to promote road safety awareness as well as encouraging healthier, fitter lifestyles for all.

It is hoped that as many children as possible will walk to and from school. Throughout the week, the children shall record how they travelled to and from school. They shall also complete some activities linked to the safety and benefits of walking to school.

Walking to School is a great way for you to “do your bit to help improve the environment, in the same way as recycling your bottles or turning off lights. We want to encourage everyone to consider how they travel to school, and try walking to school for a week. Who knows, you might just find it is quicker, healthier and less stressful!

Have you thought of car sharing?

sharedwheels.jpg

From the data collected by the Year 6 children for the school travel plan, it was found that upto 70 cars can be parked outside school at the end of the school day. As there are so many cars, it led to 38% to be parked illegally. All the children and staff at Wardley found this to be a startling number. To tackle this problem, we have decided to try and reduce the number of cars parked outside school to make Wardley a safer, less congested and polluted place for all in the local community.

The school travel plan is not anti-car. It does recognise that many journeys cannot be made in any other way. Some children live too far from the school for other means of transport to be realistic, but even those driving can make a difference with just a little effort. Cars are not the enemy but we must learn to use them with more consideration. Therefore, we are promoting the use of car sharing as a method of travelling to and from school for both staff and children. There are many benefits of car sharing:
*Reduces congestion on the road.
*Saves money as less journeys have to be made.
*Reduces pollution.

It is hoped that more children will use car sharing as sustainable form of travelling to and from school.

If any parents or children have some car sharing success stories, please let us know and we will be delighted to publish them on the website.

Year 2 Multi Skills Event

The whole of Year 2 travelled up to Heworth Comprehensive School to attend a multi skills sporting festival. The festival comprised of the children using their running, jumping, catching, kicking, throwing and balancing skills. All the children were very excited as it was the first time they had all represented the school in a competitive event. The Wardley children were split into four teams and competed with eight other teams from Whitemere, Bill Quay and Lingey House. Out of the twelve teams, we finished 2nd, 4th, 8th and 12th. The children throughly enjoyed the event and their behaviour was a credit to the school. With the event being such a success, it will hopefully become a permament addition to the sporting calender.
