Key Stage One - Self-Portraits
Year One and Two pupils have worked on their observational and interpretational skills to create realistic self-portraits.
The week began with the children studying self-portraits by famous artists such as Van Gogh and Picasso. The children analysed the shape, colours and techniques used in the self-portraits.
This led the children to experiment with a variety of mark-making and shading techniques using a pencil.
Following on from this, the children then completed a self-portrait taken from a digital image. The photograph was edited so that half the children’s face was missing.
The children’s task was to complete the other half of their face by using the techniques explored earlier in the week.
Next, the children explored colour and tone. This focused the children’s attention to the different skin tones. It enabled the children to experiment with colour through paint. The children used a variety of coloured paints and mixed them together to create a skin tone that closely matched their skin shade.
They then completed an outline drawing of their face and painted their face drawing with skin colour. After the paint had dried, the children carefully added the features of their face using coloured crayons.
To extend their skills further, the children used the collage medium to create an additional self- portrait.
This involved using paper in a variety of sizes and colours to construct their face. The skills involved included: tearing, ripping, cutting, gluing and colour matching.
If you wish to view your child’s self- portraits, please feel welcome to visit KS1 adjoining corridor, where all of the pupils work is displayed.
We are very proud of the children’s achievements in KS1, we hope you enjoy sharing this with us. Please feel free to leave a comment by clicking on the comments hyperlink.
