Year 6 Cricket
Move over Flintoff,
Wardley Winners are in town!
The Wardley Year 6 Kwik Cricket team has been extremely successful in the ASDA Kwik Cricket Festivals. The exciting journey began at Felling Cricket Club. Wardley took an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team, with both playing to a high standard. Both teams won their group matches convincingly, which led them to meet each other in the final, with the winner taking their place in the ASDA Kwik Cricket Gateshead Schools Final against Glynwood Primary School. It was a closely contested game, with both teams giving their all, but in the end the Wardley ‘A’ team came out on top. Mr Evans, the school cricket coach, could not hide his delight. He said “It was fantastic to see both our Kwik Cricket teams in the final. It was well deserved because of the brilliant performances on the day and for all the children’s hard work and practise throughout the year. The exceptional performance on the day came from Cory Gray who took a five wicket maiden.
After a few days rest, the Wardley ‘A’ team played Glynwood for a place in the North East Finals. After bowling Glynwood out for a low score, Wardley played extremely sensibly for a comfortable victory. For the second year running, Wardley were the Gateshead Schools Kwik Cricket Champions!
As a reward for this brilliant win, the team had earned the right to play at the International Test Match Arena, The Riverside, home of Durham County Cricket Club, where they would compete for the grand title of the North East Kwik Cricket Champions. On the day, the school was keenly supported by the rest of the Year 6 children. The team exceeded all expectations and gained a place in the final against Whingstone School. In a tight game, Whingstone won by just three runs. As runner up, Wardley Kwik Cricket team gained a place in the Regional ASDA Kwik Cricket Final. Having watched the Wardley games closely, Luke Anderson, a coach at Durham County Cricket Club, commented on what a fantastic fielding team the Year Six side were.
The regional final took place at Stocksfield Cricket Club in Northumberland. Teams as far as Berwick, Kendell and Lancaster came to contest the right to play in the National Finals at Trent Bridge. At the end of three group games, the Wardley team won their group and played in the semi-final against Blackcombe. After some superb batting by the team from Barrow, Wardley could not beat their total despite some fine attacking play. The Wardley team’s journey finally came to an end with a fourth place finish. This was an amazing achievement with so many outstanding teams from Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria competing. It has been a summer that has provided many happy memories and wonderful experiences for all those associated with the team. The school is extremely proud and can only hope that next year’s team goes that one step further.
