Phase 5/6 Christmas Party!

Try our video maker at Animoto.

On Wednesday 14th December, Years 5 and 6 had their Christmas party and it was so much fun! We all got dressed into our party clothes and danced the day away, including the teachers! We played lots of fun games like musical chairs, corners, musical statues and we even had a closely contested dance-off, with Aaron Cook, Amaaima Qureshi and Olly Collyer all reaching the final. We danced so much that the party food and drink was much needed too, we had very tasty things like hot dogs, pizza and cake (this was a treat from our healthy school stance of course!). Everyone had a fantastic time and it definitely got us all in the festive spirit and even more excited for Christmas.

Merry Christmas Everybody! From Years 5 and 6...

'Go Go Gadget' Robot Finale

lego robots

On Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th December, Year 5 and 6 went to Heworth CLC for a Lego Robotics event. The trip was part of the exit point for our amazing 'Go Go Gadget' topic, which has given us a fabulous insight into the newest gadgets and technology. During the visit, we programmed and controlled actual robots, making them travel, turn, wave, stop and spin. A great day was had by all and our ICT skills improved too! The groups were also praised by the staff at the CLC, who commented on our enthusiasm and excellent behaviour.

Gifted Mathematicians at Wardley

CIMG7436.JPG

On Friday 2nd December, Wardley hosted the local cluster 'Maths Challenge' which involved Wardley, Whitemere, Roman Road, and Bill Quay. Competing for Wardley were Harry Lewins, Anna McBryde, and Casey Bencito, with Evan Chrisp acting as the scoring master! Each school sent 3 of their most gifted Mathematicians who then competed against neighbouring schools in a range of logic problems, number puzzles and Mathematical games. It was a really exciting morning with first place constantly changing hands, but after the quickfire Mental round at the end, it was Bill Quay who came out as eventual winners with an impressive score of 29 points and took the trophy back to their school, closely followed by Wardley in second place with a fantastic 25 points. All the children worked really hard with all of the tough challenges they had to face and all were a credit to their school! Well done everyone who took part and a big thank you to Miss McMullen from Heworth who helped to organise the event.

Wardley Primary School's Global Dimension

CIMG8383.JPGCIMG8386.JPGCIMG8382.JPGCIMG8378.JPG

The children at Wardley Primary School are developing links with schools from all around the world. Most of the classes in the school are linked with a school from another part of the world. Our links are:

Year 5 and 6 - United States of America
Year 3 and 4 - South Korea and Taiwan
Year 1 and 2 - Uganda

The children in these classes have made a passport with information about themselves which they sent to their link school. Some of the children even went to the post box to send their passports on the way. Who will be the first to get a reply?

Year 5/6 Bunsen's Burning!

Make a video of your own at Animoto.

On Wednesday 23rd November, Year 5/6 travelled to Heworth Grange for their first transition lesson fo the year. The children were very excited as it was a Science lesson and they had the oppportunity to try out the brand new Science labs at the school, as well as experiment with bunsen burners for the first time! We are currently learning about changing state, and so the children's task was to evaporate and then condense coloured water using the bunsens, it was a great experience. We remembered all the safety features while using the apparatus and even lit the flames ourselves! Well done to everyone, it was fantastic to experience an actual Secondary school lesson, taught by Mrs Knapton, and using their labs, so a big thank you to Heworth school! Check out our video!

Phase 5/6 enjoy a few Apples!

Make your own slideshow at Animoto.

To begin their new topic of Go Go Gadget, Phase 5/6 visited the local Apple Store in Eldon square to experience the most up-to-date and modern gadgets there are on offer! All the children thought it was the best trip they'd been on in a long time! We had the chance to play with all the new gadgets in store, such as the IPhone 4s, MacBook Pro, IPads and IMac. The children then used the new MacBook Pros to create their own presentations on advances in modern technology. We even got our own t-shirts and personal DVDs to remember our trip by! We all agreed it was a fantastic way to begin the topic and now look forward to learning even more about gadgets and what they can do!

Phase 5/6 host World War Two Assembly!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On Friday 21st October Phase 5/6 finished our topic by hosting a fantastic assembly for all our parents and carers, to showcase everything we have been learning. The children created the contents of the assembly independently, with little help from their teachers, and they all came up with lots of fantastic ideas. Activities ranged from Who wants to be a Millionaire, Are you smarter than a 10 year old, to dramatic interpretation of air raids and singing wartime songs! The children did themselves proud and performed everything to an extremely high standard. Parents comments included "That was very impressive, the children seemed to know a lot", and "I'm so proud of them all". It was a fanatastic way to finish our topic and to share with our parents/carers what we have been studying. We now look forward to our next topic, "Go Go Gadget!". Well done everyone on a fantastic first half-term.

We have also been learning about safety precautions made by our government, and we even found out that Thomas Clark's cat has an uncanny resemblance to Adolf Hitler! In the next few weeks, we will be using ICT software to investigate the war in more detail and we will be finishing with an exciting trip!

Winning start for Football Team!

Our school football team made a fantastic start to the season with two impressive performances in the first round of the Holman cup. The team travelled to Roman Road Primary for the first group games and performed admirably despite only attending trials the previous week. Aaron Cook struck late in the second half of the first game with a cool finish to give us a deserved victory over Roman Road Primary. The second game, in which captain Curtis Mole dominated the midfield, was decided by a clinical finish from Luke Wright. There were many impressive debuts to start the season, with Thomas Cleminson commanding the defence and Johnathan Hay providing some excellent wing play. The boys are now through to the semi-final of the cup, and are hoping to better last year's result of coming second! Well done to everyone for such a fantastic start to the season.

Mr Connor.

This week, Years 5 and 6 have had a fantastic, fun-filled end to their 'Sporting Heroes' topic. On Monday, Year 6 travelled to the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, to do a selection of Maths activities and have a tour of the stadium. This balanced out our previous trip to St James' Park, we like to keep everyone happy! Then on Tuesday Year 5 travelled to Riverside Cricket Stadium, in Chester-le-Street. They even got to meet a professional cricket player and had a tour of the Emirates ground (not to forget meeting the Olympic wrestler on Sports Day!). Also on Tuesday, Year 6 spent the morning at Bill Quay Farm making healthy pizzas and fruit salads, as we all know that a healthy diet is an essential ingredient in the making of a successful sportsperson. What a way to end a great topic, the children have found out so much about cricket, football, ahtletics, tennis and rugby, and have created many fantastic pieces of work. Well done to everyone!

British 2012 Olympian at Wardley Sports Day!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On Tuesday 5th July, we had our sports day here at Wardley and we had the pleasure of a very special guest! The Year 5/6 topic this half-term is sporting heroes, so we thought it would be a fanatstic idea to source a local sporting hero to attend our sports day. Tom Denham, from Stockton, who will represent Great Britain in freestyle wrestling in next summer's Olympic Games, gave up an afternoon of his gruelling training schedule to help out with scoring and presentations to the winners. Tom is a local hero, and he told us all about his career so far, from missing out on the Commenwealth Games in India because of a broken leg, to being on Sky Sports this year. All the children were very excited to have a rising star in our school, and it was great that he could help out with our sports day too. He spent time in the classrooms and assembly answering questions, and then presented the winning teams with their trophy and certificates. Well done to all the children who took part in sports day, and a big thanks to Tom for making the day extra special!

Year 6 graduate from Northumbria University!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On Tuesday 14th June, Year 6 travelled to Northumbria University for an Apprentice Students on Campus day, where we all got the chance to see what life at University is like and what courses are on offer to us. We played lots of games and played 'campus monopoly', where we toured the University site on a fact finding mission! We got to try out different sports on offer and also had the privilege of a street dance lesson. We had to come up with our own routine and were taught by a professional dancer, it was so much fun! Many of us returned to school saying things like "I can't wait to go to University" and "I want to go to Northumbria". So the trip was very much worth it, giving our children the inspiration to eventually move on to higher education and remind them that their ambitions really are achievable. The day finished with graduation and certificates, what a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

Year 6 are published journalists!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

After our trip to Kingswood, Year 6 thought they needed to tell the world how amazing it was, so we did! On 10th June, we travelled to the Evening Chronicle offices in Newcastle to create a front page headline about our trip. We got a fantastic tour of the building, saw the amazing rollercoaster machine which creates the newspaper, and got to meet some of the journalists who write for the chronicle. However, the best bit was yet to come! We got the opportunity to write a whole page for the Evening Chronicle about our school and how fabulous it is. So, this week, Thursday 16th June, look out for our school page in the newspaper. We all worked really hard to create stories about the school and even created an advert for a local business too! An estimated 250,000 people will read our page this Thursday, wow!!!

Kingswood Adventure!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On Monday 6th June, Year 6 travelled to Dukeshouse Wood in Hexham, to spend 3 days of fun, thrills and excitement! We all set off on the coach at 1.30pm and arrived in Hexham at 2.15pm. Everyone was so excited and very, very hyper! First job was to make our own beds, some children did this straightaway, others struggled with the quilt cover!! We had a tour of the centre, saw where the activities were set up, and then had our dinner, which was fish and chips, William Crone absolutley loved the first meal. During the following two days, we did activities like archery, quad biking, nightline, leap of faith, indoor laser, and the most popular, 3G swing. Everyone overcame many fears, we all worked together as a team, and improved our life skills during our stay. The trip was a treat for all the hard work during the run up to SATs, and we all agreed it was one we will never forget, go Kingswood!!!

Football success yet again!

School Football.JPG

On Thursday 19th May, the football team provided another excellent display of teamwork, individual skill and a superb passing game to overcome two schools in the local Tyne View division of the Gateshead league. Harlow Green proved strong opponents in the first game, but the Wardley boys overcame some resolute defending to record a super 4-1 victory. The second game, in which the boys showed some fantastic individual skill, ended with a 4-2 win over Dunston Riverside. Reece Dunlop and Curtis Mole, although not getting on the scoresheet, both showed why Wardley have conceded so few goals this season with defensive displays that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand would have been proud of! Well done to all the boys, who are now in with a good chance of adding the league trophy to the cabinet this season (alongside the 5-a-side competition they have already won!). A big thanks to coaches Mr Connor and Mr Burfield who have been masterful tacticians all season long.

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On Friday 1st April, Year 6 visited St James' Park as part of their Literacy through sport learning programme. The children had an amazing time, for a lot of us it was the first time visiting the stadium so it was a brand new experience. We got a tour of the stadium for an hour, during which our guides Andy and Sam took lots of photos and took us to the changing rooms, pictchside, the executive boxes, and the dug-outs! Afterwards, we went to the learning centre beside Shearer's bar, to make comic strips with the photos of the tour. We were able to add dialogue and create mini comics of our day at St James'. Have a look at the slideshow! It was a GREAT DAY! To finish it off, we got some surprising news! Sam and Andy gave us 4 pairs of tickets for tomorrow's game, and Daniel Washington, Jayde Corden, Kieran McKenna and William Crone are going to watch Newcastle vs. Wolves with their parents, totally free, how cool! Have fun guys and what a way to end a super day!

On Tuesday 8th March, the Wardley football team took part in the Newcastle United foundation football tournament held at Complete Football in Gosforth. In total 23 teams from around the North-East took part. It was a group stage, then finals format, with the winners and two best runners-up going through. Despite finishing second in our group, and scoring an amazing 23 goals in 3 games, the boys narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter finals on goal difference. Everyone played fantastically well, with Brad Lowery scoring 9 goals in one match, a triple hat-trick!! It was a great day and a fantastic experience for the team. As Rhys Prudhoe said, "it was a beautiful day for the beautiful game!" We now look forward to the finals of the 5-a-side Gateshead tournament on 23rd March at the leisure centre and the return of the schools 7-a-side league the following day....a busy period for the football team!

On Thursday 3rd March, Wardley Primary hosted a Gifted and Talented Mathematics challenge for the Heworth Grange Cluster, which was aimed at the who's who of Mathematicians in each school! Wardley, Whitemere and Bill Quay all took part and it was a fantastic morning. All the children were excellent competitors and exemplary pupils, treating each other with mutual respect, through their mutual love of Mathematics!! It was a close call during the 2 hours, with each team always a point within top spot after each round. It came down to the very last round, quickfire mental questioning! The schools kept swapping first position, with Whtiemere coming out as eventual winners with 35 points, Bill Quay on 33, and Wardley (Ethan Marata, Marco Arboleda, Bethany Kendall and Harry Lewins) on 32. The children all received prizes for their efforts and it was a great chance for the children to meet future peers at Heworth too. On Thursday 10th February Year 6 visited the Emirates Riverside cricket ground in Chester-le-Street as part of their Literacy through sport Outreach programme. The children recorded a match report in the actual Sky Sports studio, using teleprompters and visual cues. They then took part in a bowling competition where we managed to knock down 18 stumps from 124 balls, a very impressive ratio indeed! The final activity of the day was definitely the highlight - the children got to meet and quiz a professional cricketer, Ruel Braithwaite, who has just signed for Durham. We found out some interesting facts: like he can bowl at speeds of up to 90mph, faster than cars on the motorway!

It was a great day and an experience that we will never forget!

On Thursday this week Year 6 travelled to Heworth Grange for their second transition lesson of the year. Each half-term we travel to the local secondary school and experience Year 7 style lessons. It's a great chance for us to get to know the teachers we'll have next year and find our way around this massive school! The lesson was linked to our Science topic at the minute, Plants and Flowers. We soldered some yellow LEDs onto our plant posters to create flashing pollens at the top of each stamen! It was great fun, and it was the first time we had all done this kind of thing, so it was definitely a worthwhile experience! Have a look at our video....

This week selected children in Years 5 and 6 have been taking part in The Primary Mathematics Challenge. It involved a series of very demanding Maths questions aimed at finding the brightest of young Mathematical minds in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It was a great way for our children at Wardley to compare themselves with children in different countries, and the results were very promising indeed! Ryan Monk and Ethan Marata of Year 6 both achieved the highest scores of 16/25, a great result based on the difficulty level of the questions, with Shannon Pearson (Y6) Harry Lewins (Y5) also achieving an impressive 15/25. Well done to everyone involved, and the national results will be available soon, we will keep you posted!!

Year 6 hit the beach!

CIMG4687.JPG

On Monday 24th May 2010, Year 6 made the most of the sunny weather by taking a trip to South Shields. They spent the day gathering data about the area for their 'Changing Coastlines' topic.

Firstly, the children had to map the area, ensuring that they included all the major landmarks and tourist attractions. After that, they completed a questionnaire and gathered information about traffic and tourists on a tally chart.

Since returning to school, the pupils have produced graphs and tables to display the information that they gathered on their trip. As a result, they have been really surprised by the contrast between South Shields and Wardley despite how close they are in location. The Year 6's have been able to draw conclusions about the way that tourisn shapes an area and how local people can contribute to this.

Today in English, Year 6 have been pitching their product ideas to their very own set of Dragons. All week they have been writing a persuasive piece to convince the panel to 'make an offer' for their chocolate teapot. This morning they used their own list of reasons to try to convince the team of Dragons. Some pitches received generous offers whilst others were given feedback about how to improve their ideas.
The pupils and teacher (Mrs Wallace) all had a really enjoyable time during the role play activity.

Maths Family Learning course for Year 5 parents and carers

On Thursday 19th November until Thursday 10th December, Wardley Primary School will be delivering an exciting and new Maths Family Learning course to parents, carers, grandparents or any other family members of children in Year 5.

It is a highly recommended course for Year 5 parents as it will help you and your child prepare for the SAT's next year.

The course has a variety of aims, including: developing parents/ carers knowledge and understanding of how and what their children will be learning at school, learning how to understand and complete tricky calculations and strategies to help your child at home. There will be opportunities for you to make your own fun resources to use with your child to help further their learning. The course also enables parents/carers to brush up on their own skills in a friendly and relaxed environment. If you wish, there is also the option to carry on the course longer and gain your own qualification.

The course begins on Thursday 19th November and runs from 2-4pm at Wardley Primary School. After school, your child will come along and join in the learning and it is a chance for you to share the new resources you have made with them.

Everyone is welcome - parents, carers, grandparents and other family members! Please click on the link below for further information or see Miss Gillie.

Peter the Great

CIMG3747.JPG CIMG3758.JPG

On Monday 1st June we started our new 'Sporting Heroes' topic. We knew that we had to expect something special as our entry point (after eating chocolate and cooking chilli) but we were not expecting to meet an actual famous professional sporting hero. To our amazement, Peter Beardsley arrived at our school with two Newcastle United Foundation coaches and we spent the afternoon learning more about fitness and the life of an athlete. In addition, we played some games to help us improve our football skills and we also learned about hydration.

Eggciting Easter Egg Competition

On the Friday before the Easter break, Mr Malik held an assembly to give out the prizes for our annual egg decorating competition. There was a winner and runner up for each year group and Mr Malik explained that it was eggtremely hard to choose the winners. "It was very clear that all of the children had tried their very best and this year the eggs were very creative and imaginative." he said.

Wonderful Water Assembly

On Tuesday 24th March 2009, Rebecca came to visit us from Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. She explained the water cycle to us and talked to us about the importance of water conservation. We really enjoyed the presentation because some of us had to wear funny hats with different weather symbols on them. The banner showed the cycle in a really easy way so that we could understand the journey of our water. Rebecca also told us about the importance of water and helped us think about how we could use it as an energy source.

The Great Wardley Hoax!

The truth is not out there - not yet anyway!Yesterday the Year 5/6 teachers created a hoax to try and develop the writing and imagination of the Year 5/6 children. The 'alien' landing was staged, we used any silver objects we could find in school and made some green goo from wallpaper paste and food colouring. It was very interesting to see the reaction of the children and I look forward to reading their stories. Sorry to scare you, but it was fun!!!

Is there anybody out there?

The key question of are we alone in the universe became a little clearer today! At approximately 8:55a.m. a strange phenonmenon appeared in the skies above Wardley. Suddenly it fell from the sky and crashed onto the school field. Year 5 and 6 pupils went to investigate! - they kept a safe distance away until the exact contents were explored by a representative of Newcastle University Space Development. These are the initial photographs from the scene, more detail is to follow....

Football Match Music

We designed a musical instrument to play at a sporting event. We made sure that they were loud and exciting. We painted them bright colours. We think that they worked brilliantly. Take a look and decide for yourself...

Our trip to St Paul's Monastery and Church

monks

We have been learning about St Bede and his life at St Paul's Monastery in Jarrow. St Paul's Church is still standing 1300 years after being built. It was an amazing experience to visit the church in which Bede would have actually worshipped. When we visited the church we had the opportunity to become monks for the morning.

In the style of St Bede

Quill pen 2

Jane Gosling came to our school from Bede's World to show us how to use a quill pen and ink. We made our Christmas cards using the same style of writing that St Bede and the other monks would have used in St Paul's Monastery in Jarrow.
