On Wednesday 14th December, Years 5 and 6 had their Christmas party and it was so much fun! We all got dressed into our party clothes and danced the day away, including the teachers! We played lots of fun games like musical chairs, corners, musical statues and we even had a closely contested dance-off, with Aaron Cook, Amaaima Qureshi and Olly Collyer all reaching the final. We danced so much that the party food and drink was much needed too, we had very tasty things like hot dogs, pizza and cake (this was a treat from our healthy school stance of course!). Everyone had a fantastic time and it definitely got us all in the festive spirit and even more excited for Christmas.
Merry Christmas Everybody! From Years 5 and 6...
On Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th December, Year 5 and 6 went to Heworth CLC for a Lego Robotics event. The trip was part of the exit point for our amazing 'Go Go Gadget' topic, which has given us a fabulous insight into the newest gadgets and technology. During the visit, we programmed and controlled actual robots, making them travel, turn, wave, stop and spin. A great day was had by all and our ICT skills improved too! The groups were also praised by the staff at the CLC, who commented on our enthusiasm and excellent behaviour.

On Friday the 25th of November 2011, the children at Wardley Primary School held a Diwali Day during which the whole school explored a variety of aspects of the Hindu festival.
Each phase was given the following parts of the celebration to focus on and become experts in:
Early Years: Rangoli Patterns and Indian Clothing
Year 1 and 2: Diva lamps
Year 3 and 4: Mendhi patterns
Year 5 and 6: Cooking a vegetable curry
Mrs Banerjee kindly went around each class in the school and talked about the way she celebrates Diwali and answered questions about the festival. In addition to that, there was a Bollywood dance instructor and a Mehndi pattern painting demonstration. To give them a real flavour of Diwali, each class was given a selection of different sweet and savoury Indian foods to sample.
At the end of the day, all the children from Reception to Year 6 met in the Key Stage 1 hall to share their learning. Children from each year group gave a short presentation to the rest of the school.
On Friday 2nd December, Wardley hosted the local cluster 'Maths Challenge' which involved Wardley, Whitemere, Roman Road, and Bill Quay. Competing for Wardley were Harry Lewins, Anna McBryde, and Casey Bencito, with Evan Chrisp acting as the scoring master! Each school sent 3 of their most gifted Mathematicians who then competed against neighbouring schools in a range of logic problems, number puzzles and Mathematical games. It was a really exciting morning with first place constantly changing hands, but after the quickfire Mental round at the end, it was Bill Quay who came out as eventual winners with an impressive score of 29 points and took the trophy back to their school, closely followed by Wardley in second place with a fantastic 25 points. All the children worked really hard with all of the tough challenges they had to face and all were a credit to their school! Well done everyone who took part and a big thank you to Miss McMullen from Heworth who helped to organise the event.
The children at Wardley Primary School are developing links with schools from all around the world. Most of the classes in the school are linked with a school from another part of the world. Our links are:
Year 5 and 6 - United States of American
Year 3 and 4 - South Korea and Taiwan
Year 1 and 2 - Uganda
The children in these classes have made a passport with information about themselves which they sent to their link school. Some of the children even went to the post box to send their passports on the way. Who will be the first to get a reply?

Thank you to everyone who helped to support our Children in Need efforts.
Once again the staff, parents and children of Wardley Primary School admirably responded to the challenge of having to raise as much money as possible for Children in Need.
The children spent a fun filled day by: sponging teachers, playing stick the tail on Spot the dog, Twister and musical spots. They also used 1p and 2p coins to make famous Gateshead and Newcastle landmarks - our very own Wardley Turner Prize event.
There was also a guess the famous celebrity quiz and a child from each class received a certificate for being the spottiest dressed child. There was also a raffle to win an enormous Christmas tree cake and a guess the number of Skittles in a jar competition. All the events were approved by the School Council, who enjoyed judging the Wardley Turner Prize.
All the children enjoyed their day and we managed to raise a very impressive £758.85.
We really appreciated all the delicious cakes that were donated for our cake stalls. Thanks again for your continued support!

On Wednesday 23rd November, Year 5/6 travelled to Heworth Grange for their first transition lesson fo the year. The children were very excited as it was a Science lesson and they had the oppportunity to try out the brand new Science labs at the school, as well as experiment with bunsen burners for the first time! We are currently learning about changing state, and so the children's task was to evaporate and then condense coloured water using the bunsens, it was a great experience. We remembered all the safety features while using the apparatus and even lit the flames ourselves! Well done to everyone, it was fantastic to experience an actual Secondary school lesson, taught by Mrs Knapton, and using their labs, so a big thank you to Heworth school! Check out our video!
On 4th November, the School Council were invited to a Junior Network Meeting at The Baltic in Gateshead. Whilst there, they had the opportunity to admire the fantastic Turner Prize entries. They also created some artwork themselves in the style of George Shaw. Alongside the Turner Prize, each School Council produced a piece of artwork on the theme of 'What Gateshead Means To Me'. Our School Council asked the pupils of Wardley what Gateshead meant to them, and used this as the basis of their artwork. After each child voted for their favourite piece, the top four were put forward to a panel which included the Mayor of Gateshead. Our efforts paid off as we made it through to the final, and were eventually chosen as the overall winners!!! A huge congratulations to all of the pupils in Wardley Primary School as they all contributed to the piece, either by putting their ideas forward or creating the artwork.

To begin their new topic of Go Go Gadget, Phase 5/6 visited the local Apple Store in Eldon square to experience the most up-to-date and modern gadgets there are on offer! All the children thought it was the best trip they'd been on in a long time! We had the chance to play with all the new gadgets in store, such as the IPhone 4s, MacBook Pro, IPads and IMac. The children then used the new MacBook Pros to create their own presentations on advances in modern technology. We even got our own t-shirts and personal DVDs to remember our trip by! We all agreed it was a fantastic way to begin the topic and now look forward to learning even more about gadgets and what they can do!

On Friday 21st October Phase 5/6 finished our topic by hosting a fantastic assembly for all our parents and carers, to showcase everything we have been learning. The children created the contents of the assembly independently, with little help from their teachers, and they all came up with lots of fantastic ideas. Activities ranged from Who wants to be a Millionaire, Are you smarter than a 10 year old, to dramatic interpretation of air raids and singing wartime songs! The children did themselves proud and performed everything to an extremely high standard. Parents comments included "That was very impressive, the children seemed to know a lot", and "I'm so proud of them all". It was a fanatastic way to finish our topic and to share with our parents/carers what we have been studying. We now look forward to our next topic, "Go Go Gadget!". Well done everyone on a fantastic first half-term.

This half-term Phase 5/6 have been learning all about World War Two as part of their topic. We have been discovering who was involved in the war, who the leaders of the major countries were, and how life changed during the war for men, women and children! We have also been learning about safety precautions made by our government, and we even found out that Thomas Clark's cat has an uncanny resemblance to Adolf Hitler! In the next few weeks, we will be using ICT software to investigate the war in more detail and we will be finishing with an exciting trip!
Our school football team made a fantastic start to the season with two impressive performances in the first round of the Holman cup. The team travelled to Roman Road Primary for the first group games and performed admirably despite only attending trials the previous week. Aaron Cook struck late in the second half of the first game with a cool finish to give us a deserved victory over Roman Road Primary. The second game, in which captain Curtis Mole dominated the midfield, was decided by a clinical finish from Luke Wright. There were many impressive debuts to start the season, with Thomas Cleminson commanding the defence and Johnathan Hay providing some excellent wing play. The boys are now through to the semi-final of the cup, and are hoping to better last year's result of coming second! Well done to everyone for such a fantastic start to the season.
Mr Connor.
"AHOY ME HEARTIES!"
To celebrate the end of a very busy and enjoyable year in nursery we held "Pirate and Princess" parties! The children and adults wore their favourite outfits and got right into the roles. We danced the "Pirate Gang " dance from Boogie beebies (you can find this on the cbeebies website if you'd like to try it out at home), walked the plank, sailed our pirate ships, feasted on fabulous food and hunted for treasure. It was an exciting day for all the children and no less for Mrs Sutton and Mrs Pringle too!
What a wonderful way to end a year packed full of fun, learning and laughter!

In nursery, rather than hold a traditional sports day we wanted to give the children the opportunity to enjoy as many sporting activities as possible and to be able share them with their parents and carers. We invited the grown ups in to have a go at some fun exercises with their children. Everyone had a super time- and no-one had to sit and wait too long for their turn to shine. Even the torrential rain did not stop us having fun- we made the most of having the large space indoors to enjoy some parachute games.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the Summer Enterprise Fayre. Although we had to be indoors we had an incredible turnout and as a result we were able to raise a fantastic amount. With everyone's support, we were able to raise a total of £1296 which, after an initial investment of £300, means that in one hour we made nearly £1000 profit!
This money will be distributed to the phase teams in the new academic year where they will purchase some fun resources for the classrooms.

This week, Years 5 and 6 have had a fantastic, fun-filled end to their 'Sporting Heroes' topic. On Monday, Year 6 travelled to the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, to do a selection of Maths activities and have a tour of the stadium. This balanced out our previous trip to St James' Park, we like to keep everyone happy! Then on Tuesday Year 5 travelled to Riverside Cricket Stadium, in Chester-le-Street. They even got to meet a professional cricket player and had a tour of the Emirates ground (not to forget meeting the Olympic wrestler on Sports Day!). Also on Tuesday, Year 6 spent the morning at Bill Quay Farm making healthy pizzas and fruit salads, as we all know that a healthy diet is an essential ingredient in the making of a successful sportsperson. What a way to end a great topic, the children have found out so much about cricket, football, ahtletics, tennis and rugby, and have created many fantastic pieces of work. Well done to everyone!

On Tuesday 5th July, we had our sports day here at Wardley and we had the pleasure of a very special guest! The Year 5/6 topic this half-term is sporting heroes, so we thought it would be a fanatstic idea to source a local sporting hero to attend our sports day. Tom Denham, from Stockton, who will represent Great Britain in freestyle wrestling in next summer's Olympic Games, gave up an afternoon of his gruelling training schedule to help out with scoring and presentations to the winners. Tom is a local hero, and he told us all about his career so far, from missing out on the Commenwealth Games in India because of a broken leg, to being on Sky Sports this year. All the children were very excited to have a rising star in our school, and it was great that he could help out with our sports day too. He spent time in the classrooms and assembly answering questions, and then presented the winning teams with their trophy and certificates. Well done to all the children who took part in sports day, and a big thanks to Tom for making the day extra special!
On Wednesday 15th June 2011, we held a social event to celebrate our school community and to acknowledge and say thanks to our parents, carers and local volunteers.
During the evening, everyone who attended was able to look at our fabulous new artwork (painted by Linda Watson, a local artist), chat with school staff, see some of the pupils' wonderful work, look at photos of recent trips and were treated to a lovely buffet.
Click on the link to see some of our beautiful displays and photographs from the evening. Don't forget that if you can dedicate any of your own time to helping out in our school, we are always seeking new volunteers. Just see Mrs Wallace if you are interested.

On Wednesday 15th June, The Elastic Band came to Wardley Primary School to introduce the children to 60's pop hits. The children heard a range of popular hits such as, Louie Louie, La Bamba, Wipeout and an instant favourite, Yellow Submarine. Pupils were invited to take part either by playing a variety of percussion instruments or dancing and singing along to the catchy tunes!

On Tuesday 14th June, Year 6 travelled to Northumbria University for an Apprentice Students on Campus day, where we all got the chance to see what life at University is like and what courses are on offer to us. We played lots of games and played 'campus monopoly', where we toured the University site on a fact finding mission! We got to try out different sports on offer and also had the privilege of a street dance lesson. We had to come up with our own routine and were taught by a professional dancer, it was so much fun! Many of us returned to school saying things like "I can't wait to go to University" and "I want to go to Northumbria". So the trip was very much worth it, giving our children the inspiration to eventually move on to higher education and remind them that their ambitions really are achievable. The day finished with graduation and certificates, what a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

After our trip to Kingswood, Year 6 thought they needed to tell the world how amazing it was, so we did! On 10th June, we travelled to the Evening Chronicle offices in Newcastle to create a front page headline about our trip. We got a fantastic tour of the building, saw the amazing rollercoaster machine which creates the newspaper, and got to meet some of the journalists who write for the chronicle. However, the best bit was yet to come! We got the opportunity to write a whole page for the Evening Chronicle about our school and how fabulous it is. So, this week, Thursday 16th June, look out for our school page in the newspaper. We all worked really hard to create stories about the school and even created an advert for a local business too! An estimated 250,000 people will read our page this Thursday, wow!!!

On Monday 6th June, Year 6 travelled to Dukeshouse Wood in Hexham, to spend 3 days of fun, thrills and excitement! We all set off on the coach at 1.30pm and arrived in Hexham at 2.15pm. Everyone was so excited and very, very hyper! First job was to make our own beds, some children did this straightaway, others struggled with the quilt cover!! We had a tour of the centre, saw where the activities were set up, and then had our dinner, which was fish and chips, William Crone absolutley loved the first meal. During the following two days, we did activities like archery, quad biking, nightline, leap of faith, indoor laser, and the most popular, 3G swing. Everyone overcame many fears, we all worked together as a team, and improved our life skills during our stay. The trip was a treat for all the hard work during the run up to SATs, and we all agreed it was one we will never forget, go Kingswood!!!
As part of our reward system, there is an opportunity for children to have tea with Mr Malik. To get to this stage, children need to collect 40 points through following school rules, helping and supporting others as well as working hard in lessons. The first group of children to get to this stage had their tea this morning.
Lara, Amaaima, Matthew and Megan had the option of tea or juice and a cake or a jam tart whilst the group enjoyed a lively discussion about weddings, earrings and holidays. As it was a reward for the children, the dishes were left for Mr Malik to wash up but he didn't mind too much!
This week the children invited their parents and carers into nursery to join in the fun. The Stay and Play sessions give the children the opportunity to show exactly what it is that they fill three hours a day with.
The children were so excited about their special visitors...
The parents joined in with painting, gluing, writing, reading, sand and water play, building and small world inside... and outside the children showed their parents our lovely garden for running, exploring, climbing, batting, pedalling, exploring.
What a lot of fun and learning!

On Thursday 19th May, the football team provided another excellent display of teamwork, individual skill and a superb passing game to overcome two schools in the local Tyne View division of the Gateshead league. Harlow Green proved strong opponents in the first game, but the Wardley boys overcame some resolute defending to record a super 4-1 victory. The second game, in which the boys showed some fantastic individual skill, ended with a 4-2 win over Dunston Riverside. Reece Dunlop and Curtis Mole, although not getting on the scoresheet, both showed why Wardley have conceded so few goals this season with defensive displays that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand would have been proud of! Well done to all the boys, who are now in with a good chance of adding the league trophy to the cabinet this season (alongside the 5-a-side competition they have already won!). A big thanks to coaches Mr Connor and Mr Burfield who have been masterful tacticians all season long.
In the run up to the Royal Wedding, all the children have been getting ready for the big day by learning about weddings and the royal family.
The children have found out that street parties have always been part of celebrating important national events. So what better way of getting ready for the marriage of H.R.H Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton on the 29th of April than to hold our own Wardley Primary School Street Party.

Year 1/2 had an exciting afternoon making bird feeders yesterday. We've been collecting our bottles for weeks, and now it was finally time to get down to the making of the feeders. First we had to cut our bottles to the right size, which was quite tricky but we managed. Then we had to hole punch the bottles to thread the string through. Finally we filled the feeders with delicious bird food. The best part was taking them outside and hanging them in the bird garden. All we have to do now is wait for the birds to come flocking. We'll be waiting with binoculars.

On Friday 19th March, Wardley Primary School went all red for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day. The children and teachers came to school in their finest shades of rouge or in their favourite outfits to mark the occasion, with a full day planned of exciting and gooey activities. This year's theme was to do 'Something Funny for Money' and Wardley Primary took this one step further and made it 'Something Runny Funny for Money'. The bravest of children were sponsored to stand in a mixture of cold spaghetti and custard for a whole minute, ensuring they dug their toes into the mush beneath them. Following this, the children then had the opportunity to throw soggy sponges into the faces of their teachers, drenching them from head to toe. A huge selection of cakes and biscuits then went on sale for children to buy and eat whilst they completed a fun red nose day quiz, created silly faces and built wobbly towers with their pennies.
The day was a HUGE success as Wardley Primary School raised a staggering £1848.49!
An enormous THANK YOU to everyone for their contributions and efforts, which made the day such a success!

On Thursday 3rd March, Wardley Primary hosted a Gifted and Talented Mathematics challenge for the Heworth Grange Cluster, which was aimed at the who's who of Mathematicians in each school! Wardley, Whitemere and Bill Quay all took part and it was a fantastic morning. All the children were excellent competitors and exemplary pupils, treating each other with mutual respect, through their mutual love of Mathematics!! It was a close call during the 2 hours, with each team always a point within top spot after each round. It came down to the very last round, quickfire mental questioning! The schools kept swapping first position, with Whtiemere coming out as eventual winners with 35 points, Bill Quay on 33, and Wardley (Ethan Marata, Marco Arboleda, Bethany Kendall and Harry Lewins) on 32. The children all received prizes for their efforts and it was a great chance for the children to meet future peers at Heworth too. Everyone had a great time and a big thanks goes to Miss McMullan from Heworth for arranging transport to Wardley!

In the first half of the Spring term in the Foundation Stage, the topic we have been covering is "Story time". Each week the children were introduced or reintroduced to a traditional story. The stories were read, retold, acted, watched, played and explored by the staff and children. In nursery, the children loved to hate the "Big, Bad Wolf" from Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. They investigated porridge oats, how to scoop and pour them and also how to make a delicious bowlful to eat; just like the ones Goldilocks and the Three Bears enjoyed.
The sandpit became a mine full of shining jewels for the children to dig for with the help of seven little men and we used a computer program to decorate a gingerbread man, luckily, before he ran away.
The last week of the half term was very exciting as the parents and carers were invited into nursery to "stay and play" and share some of the story activities that their children have enjoyed over the last few weeks. You can see from our photos that everyone had a great time!

Yesterday, one of our pupil's visited the Mayor of Gateshead as a result of winning the Gateshead 'Design a Christmas Card' competition for schools.
From all the entries, across Gateshead, Courtney's reindeer design stood out for the judges. Her design has now been made into a real card which is being used by lots of Gateshead workers. What was particularly impressive was that Courtney designed her card completely independently: she did not have any help from her teachers.
Mr Malik and Miss Foster went along with Courtney and her parents and had tea with the Mayor in his office at Gateshead Civic Centre. The Mayor presented Courtney with some special prizes which included toy "Metro Gnomes" which Courtney was over the moon about.

I would like to say a really big thank you to families for their support over the last few days. The weather conditions have been challenging but we have endeavoured to battle on, make some changes and stay open.
The staff have shown fantastic dedication and have all managed to get in from a wide variety of places; helping to dig out paths before setting up their classes.
I would like to say thank you to all parents and carers who have shown patience and understanding with regards to the management of the entry and collection of children. We attempted a new system at the end of the day on Tuesday, which went very smoothly with your help. As a result, we will use this system under these types of conditions from now on.
For the information of all parents of children in Year 6. The SATs meeting that was due to take place this Thursday 3rd December has been cancelled due to the weather conditions. It will be rearranged for another afternoon and we will inform you of the date/time when we do so. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
School is open as normal today. The children are to be collected as normal at 3.15pm.
The children will have the opportunity to play in the snow, however, they will need to have a change of clothes to go outside.
Mr Evans' Cricket club has been cancelled, but at present, Mr Malik's Go-Karting club is still on. The school will contact parents of the children attending the Go-Kart club if weather deteriorates and Mr Malik has to cancel the club.
As part of our charity support, we have once again supported the Shoe Box appeal. The shoe boxes provided by our community will allow children who have very little, to experience the happiness and enjoyment that our children have at this special time of year.
This year our grand total was 63 which, in the current financial situation, is a fantastic effort. Thank you to all the families who have taken part - your contribution is much appreciated.

The school dinner menu has changed and had been designed around the colder weather. You can download the menu by clicking on the link below.
If your child is having packed lunch, please remember to provide a healthy balanced meal containing fruit and vegetables as well as meat or fish, carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta) and dairy. Healthy drinks would be water, fruit juice or milk.
Children should be discouraged from having sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks.

Wardley Primary School in partnership with Wardley Children's Centre, launched a six week pre-nursery programme in the summer term for the children due to begin nursery this September. The aim was to support parents and children with the important first step of starting education.
The first week of the programme involved a meeting for the parents to attend and was to share the aims and structure of the programme. For the following five weeks, sessions were aimed at both parents and children. The programme was based around five main themes:
Week 1: Stories and books
Week 2: Nursery rhymes
Week 3: Number rhymes and songs
Week 4: Action rhymes and songs
Week 5: Mark making/ fine motor development
Each session involved a short adult led activity and then allowed the children and parents to engage in play activities related to the theme of the session. The children had access to the Early Years outdoor area for four of the five weeks and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area. The fifth week allowed the children to have the opportunity to visit, explore and play in their nursery classroom.
The sessions allowed the children to become familiar with their new school and nursery environment. It also gave the children the opportunity to meet other children from their nursery class and meet their new teacher, Miss Gillie. The parents and children also received activity ideas, factsheets, a free book, colouring sheets, nursery rhyme and song words to carry on the educational fun at home over the holidays!
We look forward to the children beginning their education in nursery with us in September!
Reception's topic this half term was Our World. The children have been learning about their local and regional area and about other cultures from countries around the World.
As part of the topic, the children had a visit from musicians who performed a Music Workshop for the children to participate in and experience music and songs from other countries and cultures. They really enjoyed dressing up, singing, dancing and playing a range of musical instruments.
The children have learned a lot of new songs and love singing and performing them!

Mr Malik held a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 assembly this week to give out certificates and prizes to our excellent handwriters. The awards were given for 'most improved handwriting' and 'neatest handwriting'.
Our school is really focusing on achievement in handwriting and Mr Malik was really proud to be able to hand out pens, pencils and rubbers to the children who had done really well. He said: 'It was a really hard decision to pick the winners because there were so many good writers and so many children had improved. Over the half term, Mr Malik had the opportunity to visit Denmark, with a group of Gateshead teachers, in order to look at Danish schools and the way in which they educate their young people.
During the week, a number of schools (skole) were visited including nurseries (kindergarten), private schools and schools with a focus on forest learning. The experience was enjoyable, interesting and raised a number of aspects for the staff to talk about.
Some amazing facts to get you started:
- Children can start school at 6.30am and finish at 5.00pm
- They must go outside for up to two hours at a time, in all weathers
- Knives are used when children are learning in the forest
- There is no uniform in Danish schools
- Teachers are called by their first names
To see more photos and find out about the schools in Denmark, please click the link below where you can read the daily weblog that was kept.
On Thursday 19th November until Thursday 10th December, Wardley Primary School will be delivering an exciting and new Maths Family Learning course to parents, carers, grandparents or any other family members of children in Year 5.
It is a highly recommended course for Year 5 parents as it will help you and your child prepare for the SAT's next year.
The course has a variety of aims, including: developing parents/ carers knowledge and understanding of how and what their children will be learning at school, learning how to understand and complete tricky calculations and strategies to help your child at home. There will be opportunities for you to make your own fun resources to use with your child to help further their learning. The course also enables parents/carers to brush up on their own skills in a friendly and relaxed environment. If you wish, there is also the option to carry on the course longer and gain your own qualification.
The course begins on Thursday 19th November and runs from 2-4pm at Wardley Primary School. After school, your child will come along and join in the learning and it is a chance for you to share the new resources you have made with them.
Everyone is welcome - parents, carers, grandparents and other family members! Please click on the link below for further information or see Miss Gillie.

A warm welcome to all children, parents and carers to the beginning of an exciting new school year. We hope you have had an enjoyable break, despite the weather, and have had a chance to relax and recharge.
Last term saw Mr Scott (promotion to a new school) and Mrs Dixon (family commitments) leave our school. Both members of staff were extremely popular and will be missed by staff, parents/carers and children alike.
We have recently appointed two new members of staff who have already settled well and are excited at the challenge of working to the high expectations set at Wardley. Miss McLachlan will teach in Y6 whilst Miss Murphy will teach Y5.
At the end of June, the school was inspected under the new OFSTED framework which was recently receiving so much media attention. The new format was to raise the bar on expectations of schools in order to support them to achieve even more success.

The inspectors were highly impressed with the behaviour and attitude of all the children which was a testament to the partnership between school and home.

Wardley Primary School Council have recently become part of the Gateshead Junior Community Network and, along with several other Gateshead schools, attended the conference at The Swallow Hotel last week.
The schools were asked to deliver a three minute presentation on something that they were proud to have achieved this year. We delivered ours based on our Charity work and in particular, the School Council wanted to focus on the success of Comic Relief Day 2009.
The children really enjoyed delivering the presentation- they showed a powerpoint, sang, danced and even wore their pyjamas and the best part- they even got to use a microphone!
Wardley School Council were very proud to come 2nd place for our presentation and were even more pleased with their prize- a big bag of sweets to share!
Recently the School Council have joined the Gateshead Junior Community Network. This involves Wardley Primary working in partnership with several other Gateshead schools to promote Community Cohesion.
The School Council were very lucky to have Julie and Annie come into school to help them to learn about what community cohesion is and what it means in terms of the local area in Wardley and in Gateshead. They did some discussion work based around belonging to various groups both inside and outside of school and the advantages and disadvantages of being in a group. The council then plotted on a map of the local area where they belong in their different groups and they were surprised to see how vast an area the different groups they belong to covered!
The School Council really enjoyed the session and learned a lot about their local community. They were delighted to receive free Gateshead Community Network mugs, chocolate and pens as a reward for their hard work at the end!

We try to provide a range of clubs (arts, sporting, academic and creative) and cater for the needs and interests of all the children at Wardley Primary School.

On the Friday before the Easter break, Mr Malik held an assembly to give out the prizes for our annual egg decorating competition. There was a winner and runner up for each year group and Mr Malik explained that it was eggtremely hard to choose the winners. "It was very clear that all of the children had tried their very best and this year the eggs were very creative and imaginative." he said.

Just a quick reminder about the initiative to improve attendance and give the oppurtunity to reward a family with a break to Disneyland Paris donated by Hays Travel.
The qualifying period for the competition started 20th April and is running to 10th July.
Pupils across participating schools with 100% attendance and punctuality are eligible to go into the draw.
We will inform you of the winner in July but remember "YOU'VE GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!"
Parents and carers of pupils at Wardley Primary School have recently completed their French-tastic family learning course.
They have learned all about what their children will be covering in their french lessons and have had a go at learning the language for themselves. They have been involved with learning numbers, colours and how to have a basic conversation in french. They have really enjoyed attending the sessions themselves and then having their children join them after school to carry on the learning journey together. Lots of resources were made by the parents and the children to take home and use to further support their learning.
The next Family Learning course is a Literacy based course called Playing with Words. It begins on Thursday 23rd April 2-4pm. This is suitable for parents/ grandparents/ carers across the whole school. If you would like to take part in this course, please see Miss Gillie.
The nursery children who will be beginning Reception in September had a very special visitor and delivery this week!
The Bookstart Treasure Chests arrived at Nursery and inside the children received two reading books, a colouring book, colouring pencils, a pencil sharpener and some information about books for parents to read. The librarian from Pelaw Library came into nursery to read us a lovely story called: How do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? This was very exciting for some of our nursery children as they are very interested in dinosaurs. Parents and carers were also invited in to share the story session and information about the Bookstart Treasure Chests with their children.
After the Easter holidays, we are beginning a new Family Learning course called Words are Child's Play.
It is a literacy based course for parents/carers of children throughout the primary age range and aims to develop parents/carers knowledge and understanding of how and what their children will be learning in Literacy at school. There will be opportunities for you to make your own fun resources to use with your child to help further their learning. The course also enables parents/carers to brush up on their own skills too in a friendly and relaxed environment.
The course begins on Thursday 23rd April and runs from 2-4pm at Wardley Primary School. After school, your child will come along and join in the learning and it is a chance for you to share the new resources you have made with them.

It was an extremely competitive event with all children wanting to win whilst having a great deal of fun. At the end of the afternoon, Wardley ...
Wardley Primary had a Silly Day on Friday 13th March to raise as much money as we could for Comic Relief.
We all came to school in our pyjamas and tried hard not to fall asleep! There was no time for sleeping though, there was so much fun to be had! Read on to find out more about our silly day...
The Dog Warden came to visit Wardley Primary pupils to deliver a special assembly to the children in the school.
He told the children all about the role of a dog warden and how we should look after and take care of dogs. The dog warden brought his own cuddly dog Archie to show us how to care for dogs. He also explained to us what we should do if we ever see a stray dog in the local community.
The dog warden told us a very important massage to pass on to all parents and carers- if you live in Gateshead and have a dog over six months old, you can have them tagged for free. Just click on the Gateshead Council website for more details.
During our recent topic of Goodies and Baddies, we found out about Goodies in the community and learned about the fantastic work that Police Officers and Fire-Fighters do. To end the topic, the children really enjoyed having a visit from the local Police Community Officer. They learned all about what a Police Officer does and about keeping safe from strangers in the holidays. The children did some colouring work with the Police Officer and tried on some of the uniform too!
The children had a great time dressing up in our own Police and Fire-fighters costumes and role-playing the jobs. They even made a fantastic fire-engine to get to the emergency quicker and used old pipes as fire hoses!
A fantastic topic that was enjoyed by all of the children and lots of valuable information was learned.
This half term the children in the Early Years will be learning about Animals.
Click on the link below to find out some of the key questions we shall be trying to answer with the children and how you can help to support your child at home.

As part of our "Twitchers" topic we are learning about how people look after their birds with care and sensitivity. Becky a local falconer came to visit us with her Harris Hawk Mort. She explained to us about birds of prey and how she looks after Mort. She told us that Mort needs daily exercise and about what he eats, he even had his tea before he left - a chick! We were able to get up close and touch Mort and some of us who answered Becky's quiz questions correctly held him, but only after wearing a special falconer's glove to protect our hands from Mort's talons.
The children in reception made the most out of the recent snowy weather.
They made sure that they were dressed for the snow and put on their coats, hat, scarf, gloves and of course, wellies!
They did snow dances; made snow angels on the ground by lying down and flapping their arms and legs; did snowy art work on the ground exploring the ways that they could use their hands, fingers and feet to create pictures in the snow; they made marks in the snow and wrote their name and other messages for each other; they went into role pretending to be ice skaters; and they enjoyed sticking their tongues out to taste the snow- the children described it as: "icy cold", "freezing", "melty" and "tickly". The children had a fantastic time in the snow.
We hope it snows again soon!
The children in nursery have been very busy learning about sounds.
They have been learning to use their ears and listen very carefully to sounds in the environment. We went on a sound walk and took photos of all the different sounds that we could hear. We then played a very exciting game called drum outdoors where we explored all the different sounds we could make with a drum beater outside. It was very noisy! We have been learning the names of musical instruments and experimenting with the different ways they can be played and the sounds that they can make. We have discovering lots of new sounds we can make and we have been learning lots of new words related to sounds too.
Wardley Primary Early Years children had a very exciting visit from a puppet character who told them all about the NSPCC charity and how they could raise some money to help children in danger. The children listened very carefully and took some little jobs home to do with their parents and carers in order to raise money for the charity.
Two members of the firefighters from our local community and their fire engine visited Year 1 and 2 for their annual fire safety talk. The children watched a video about the importance of not playing with matches. The children then had the opportunity to try on a firefighter's uniform and see what different equipment a fire engine has on board. The safety session ended with the children having a turn on the hose. Some of the chlidren expressed a desire to be firefighters when they grow up.
Last year the children from Key Stage One and Key Stage Two were asked to take part in a competition to compose a short poem for three stone seats that were to be made and put into Wardley Park for the community to use.
The Music Workshop teachers from Gateshead LEA invade Wardley for the afternoon. They came singing sea shanties, capturing pirates and telling tales of treasure. They taught the children all about keeping a steady beat and gaining a sense of melody. The children had a fantastic time. The Key Stage 1 teachers would like to thank the LEA music teachers as they prepared the 'Pirate' themed workshop especially for the beginning of our new topic.
This week, the Early Years children have had their Christmas Parties.
We played lots of fun games and won lots of prizes. We did some excellent dancing. Callum from nursery even decided to try break dancing! We had a delicious party tea and then came the best part... we sang Jingle Bells and Santa came! He said we had been very good boys and girls and we got a brilliant present to take home.

Since the school was painted in the summer holidays the early years staff and children have been working very hard to turn our classrooms back into stimulating learning environments. Here is an example of some of the display work that has been created.
We are always changing our displays and we will post more on the website soon.
On Monday 15th December, the Nursery children put on their Christmas Performance to the parents. This consisted of a selection of nursery rhymes the children have been learning since beginning Nursery and a few Christmas songs. A super performance. Well done to children and staff!
Bob Tweddell visited Year One and Two to discuss what it was like in Wardley in the past. Mr Tweddell, local resident and Grandparent to a child in the school, brought in a time line to demonstrate the changes to the local area over the last 200 years. He also answered some key questions about the history of Wardley and also how his childhood was very different to the children's at our school today.
The Key Stage One children have been busy writing a song all about Wardley. Using places and things seen on their walk around the local area as their inspiration, the children produced their own song.
Walking Through Wardley Song
Over the last week, the nursery children have been engaged with a number of exciting Christmas activities. This included a Santa's Workshop, where the children were involved with making lists of toys, designing, making and delivering the presents on Santa's sleigh.
On Friday 12th December, the Reception children performed a play called The Nursery Rhyme Nativity. This was a traditional nativity accompanied by a selection of christmas songs with nursery rhyme tunes. The children put on an excellent performance despite over half of Miss Gillie and Mrs Atkinson's class being absent due to chicken pox!
Well done to all the children and staff. A fabulous time was had by all!
On Thursday 11th December, Key Stage One performed a Christmas Play called Donkey For Sale. The children performed magnificently in front of their family members. The teachers were delighted with the children as they all used clear and loud voices so that all the audience could easily follow the Christmas story.
Click on the gallery to see more photos of the fun in the snow.
On Thursday we brought our warm clothes, wellies and sledges to school so that we could have some snowy fun at playtime. Most people played on the field with their sledges but others helped to build numerous snowmen and some Year Six children created a fun new game - snow basketball. Everyone was very cold and wet afterwards but it was definitely worth it.
Over the Christmas period, we have decided to support St. Oswald's Hospice in our own small way.

As part of our committment to supporting charities, we took part in the Shoe Box appeal, which looks to provide gifts at Christmas for children across the world who otherwise would have nothing.
We set a target to collect 75 boxes in total with bronze, silver and gold certificates going to each class depending on the number of boxes collected.

In September, children across the school looked for sponsorship to complete spelling activities in support of the NSPCC.
On Friday 3rd October the community police officer, Stuart came to visit us. He talked to us about how to keep safe on Bonfire Night.
We found out that SPARKLERS and not rockets are the most dangerous fireworks for children as these are the ones we touch. They can burn our faces and hands so we MUST wear gloves and keep them well away from anyones faces.
We also found out where to put them when they go out. They should go in a bucket of WATER or SAND as putting them in the bin when they haven't cooled could cause a fire. Also DON'T EVER pick them up from the floor as you never know when they went out.
If you play with fireworks this could happen!!!
There is an organised display on at Oliver Henderson Park and Saltwell Park. Check out Gatesheads website http://www.gatesheadcouncil.org for more details and remember to STAY SAFE!
We were lucky to have a super story teller visit school who is also a Christian. He is called Ian Cambell from South Shields and he makes assemblies Great!
We are extremely proud to announce that the school has achieved the Artsmark Silver award for our high level of provision to the arts. By gaining the Artsmark Silver award, the school has shown it's commitment to the wider development of pupils and teachers and to raising the profile of it's arts provision both within the school and the local community.
The arts cover the four artforms of art, drama, dance and music. Over the last couple of years, we have been developing and increasing the provision we offer to the children through organising a range of activities to enrich and broaden the curriculum, such as visits to arts organisations, artists coming in to school, various competitions, and events within school.
The awards ceremony was held at the Northern Stage in Newcastle and it was a fun filled event, with music and dance performances from various schools around the North East. Heather Seymour and Adam McIntyre accompanied Miss Gillie and Mr Malik to collect the award and to celebrate the achievement.
Thank you to all of the staff and pupils at Wardley for their hard work and dedication to the arts.
Over the summer holidays, there is a huge amount of work going on within school. The replacement of windows and panels continues in the KS2 building along with internal and external painting across the whole school. However, amongst this, we have managed to squeeze in the Active Kidz summer play scheme for 5-7 year olds.

For those parents and carers looking for activities that children can be involved in over the long summer, Gateshead's programme is designed to give competitively priced options. Please see the attached form which gives all the information necessary.
Over the last two weeks, Wardley have competed in the Tyne & Wear Tennis challenges for Year 3 and Year 5.
During our Be Healthy week, Stephen Turnbell, a professional footballer from Hartlepool United, came into Year One and Two to discuss with the children the importance of a healthy diet and doing plenty of exercise. He also delivered some coaching, wowed the children and staff with his tricks and skills, and refereed some 7 a side matches. The children had a great afternoon and discovered how much hard work and dedication it takes to be an elite athlete.
Fruity Friday is a charity fundraiser created by Cancer Research to raise the awareness of how vital fruit is in our diet as a strategy to fight against cancer.
Back in February, the School Council decided they wanted to raise money for a worthwhile cause and as cancer is something that appears to be a disease that can always be linked to someone you know, they decided this was a good cause.
A letter was sent out asking for a donation and School promised to make the afternoon all about fruit. The kitchen bought star fruit as a special fruity lunchtime treat and across each phase, a variety of different activities were completed. Furthermore, all classes entered the Fruity Superhero Competition. Have a look below at the class winners who have been entered into the national competition as well as some of the fruity fun we got up to!
We managed to raise £184.00, so thank you to all those who contributed!
The number of children in the United Kingdom travelling to and from school by car is steadily increasing. In 2005, National Statistics suggested that 43% of primary school children are being driven to and from school.
At Wardley Primary School, we would like to see this number decrease. To do this, we have developed a school travel plan, which involved consultation with children, staff, school governors and parents.
The travel plan shows Wardley Primary School’s commitment to working with the community to:
*Improve the environment.
*Reduce car traffic to and from school.
*Encourage cycling to school as an alternative to the car to save energy, minimise air pollution and increase pupil fitness.
*Develop the social skills of all pupils through their active involvement in the development, implementation and evaluation of this plan.
To download the full version of the school travel plan click here
